And the AmJur Goes to

Oscars open thread. Just want to note that I'm a huge fan of Jon Stewart, but his opening kinda blew. It was almost like an opening act at a comedy club. What's the deal Jon?

Yeah, I felt like the opening fell a little flat, too. But I attribute it to the audience, not Jon Stewart. If he had floated those lines in front of a Daily Show crowd, it would've been funnier, I think. But I think he's picked up some traction since then.

Overall he was way better than Letterman, I'm not sure if he got to the Crystal level.

I did like his joke about Dick Cheney shooting Bjork during his dress fitting.

The political-style ads were great. I think the problem was that the targets of his jokes were in the audience, whereas on The Daily Show the targets are generally not sitting in the studio. Hollywood just doesn't like to laugh at itself quite that much.

Agreed. It's rare that a joke takes aim at two people I equally despise.

Also, ding dong the brokeback hype is dead.

Never! Brokeback hype will never quit us!

It's sad that the cultural backlash to the hype of Brokeback Mountain came to eclipse the movie itself in the eyes of a lot of the public. In my opinion, all the stale jokes and all the media focus on this movie does not diminish it. It was the best film of the year. Crash, which was quite enjoyable, also happened to be manipulative to the point of being assaultive, and reliant on an incredibly gimmicky screenplay for its effect. Its nomination in the Best Picture category was questionable in my opinion. It's victory was a disgrace. For anybody who cares, here's an article a friend passed on written right after the Oscars were over, articulating how this could have happened.

What? No comment about the verdict? I think Mo Kashmiri is deserving of some big props from Nuts and Boalts today!

I received another email today from Dean Ortiz, but no class rank as of yet.

Stop wasting your time forwarding other emails until you have finished sending out the rankings please.

Its been a week already a team of trained gerbals could have emailed everyone their rank by now.

Yes, this is totally ridiculous.

And why is the Dean of Students the one who has to individually email everyone their rank? Seems incredibly inefficient. Also, it besmirches Ortiz's reputation for efficency, given that people want the information faster than she's doling it out. Even if she's doing it as fast as she can (doubtful, highly doubtful), there are reputational costs to Ortiz involved. It's not her role to take the heat for slowly doing an adminstrative task that someone else could be performing. The rank should be available online through BearFacts or some Boalt-specific program. Or the registrar's office should be handing it out.

Wait, the reason for getting your rank at all is to apply for clerkships right? But we apply for those over the summer?

So what's the big deal? Everyone needs to chill out. If you have a legitimate reason for needing it now, that's understandable. But it seems like everyone else is being obnoxious for no reason.

You'll get your rank when you get it. So stop asking.

Armen,

I don't think it's a matter of NEEDING it right away. It's that these little things--wanting your rank, getting grades within 2 months, Civ Pro II scheduling, a bitchy registrar, to name a few--add up to have a major impact on how people view their time here.

The Dean ought to be aware of all this (all this stuff, not just the rankings issue) and try to change it--it'll make people feel better about Boalt. And as of right now, bitching on this blog seems to be the only outlet we have.

RE: class rankings. I got mine in an email from Ortiz on Friday (3/3) (top 10%)

Also, I resent incompetance. It is incredibly poor planning to announce something to everyone and not be ready to perform.

I don't need my ranking now, but if you promise to give it to me, you damn well better be able to deliver.

A good dictator/manager knows that controlling expectations is half of keeping your people happy. And my expectations have not been managed well
