A Big Thanks

A lot of people have asked me how much money was raised at the BLF Auction on Saturday. I'm happy to report that close to 500 people attended and our net profits were over $35,000. This is a marked increase in support and it means that there will be at least three Phoenix Fellows in the class of 2014.

This success is largely due to the generous donations of local businesses and faculty members, along with the high attendance and competitive bidding of students. It's so great to see Boalt students and faculty come together to support diversity and public interest.

Professor Tall*y wins the award this year for Top Auction Prof, bringing in $1600 (along with Professor Lest*r) for a murder mystery dinner and $300 for a poker night along with three other profs.

Thanks to all who attended, supported, and purchased!

Law School Prom, Minus the Corsage

I thought the BLF Auction was a lot of fun and a big success! Good venue, great food, killer dance moves, people looking all fancy.

I haven't heard any figures but I would hope BLF raised a nice sum for the Phoenix Fellowship. The goal this year was to award two fellowships for the Class of 2013. Based on the bidding war that ensued among 1Ls during the live auction, I'd say BLF has a shot.

Highlights? Best auction items?

BLF???

Is the BLF Auction really happening this year? I looked at the list of auctions and it seems really short and unimpressive. Didn't we have three times as many auctions last year and the year before? Or is there normally a last minute crush of donations in the hours leading up to the event?

Although the faculty auctions totally outnumber the student ones, I notice that no professor I've ever taken a class with is donating anything. Lester, Moran, Peterson, Talley, Rakowski, & Caron - I'm talking to you! Since the rest are at Harvard this year, I suppose they get a pass.

I also notice there's no link on the webpage to donate products and services for auctions- is there any way to donate besides signing up in person in the lobby? The only way I even found out about this website was from a friend who got it from the c/o 2009 email list.

Are people going to BLF?

No Means No

In honor of the recent Sexual Assault Week in Crim Law, and this Friday's BLF Auction, an e-mail passed on by my HS Government teacher.

Police today warned all men who frequent clubs and parties to stay cautious when offered drinks by women. Females are using a date rape drug called "BEER" to target unsuspecting men. This drug comes in liquid form and is available everywhere.

"Beer" is used by female predators to persuade helpless male victims to go home with them. Women need only persuade a man to consume a few of these "BEERS" and then ask him home for no-strings-attached sex, a simple approach that renders most men helpless. After several "BEERS," men will have sex with even unattractive women. Often men awaken with only hazy memories of the night before, a horrible headache, and a vague feeling that something bad happened. Some really unfortunate men are even separated from their life's savings in a scam called "a relationship." In extreme cases, females have entrapped unsuspecting males into long-term servitude through a punishment called "Marriage". Apparently, men are much more susceptible to this scam once "BEER" is administered.

Forward this warning to every male you know. And if you, or some man you know, have fallen victim to this insidious "BEER" and the predatory women who administer it, rest assured: male support groups exist in every major city where you can discuss the ugly details of your encounter in an open and frank manner with similarly affected, like-minded guys. For the support group nearest you, look in the Yellow Pages under: "Golf Courses."
