Comment and Goeth

For a while now I've been taken aback by a lot of the witty comments. I want to know who you are. This sounds like a Craigslist rant or missed connection or something, but I've been meaning to ask: who the hell are you people? So for this particular thread, I ask that you post who you, the gentle commenter are. Nothing more, nothing less, well something more if there's anything lighting a fire under your ass, but you get my point. Some of the regular readers come up to me and tell me they read N&B, but you're welcome to note that you're a reader too. WHO ARE YOU PEOPLE?

Armen,

It seems as though people are afraid to give up their anonymity. I'm not. I am the Alpha and the Omega.

As I type this storm clouds are gathering above me. It is perhaps not wise in this weather to tempt the powers that be. Oh well.

I don't understand. Armen wants us to post who we are? Nah. The anonymity makes this place one of the most honest discussion zones in Boalt. I think the anons should appreciate, though, Armen's praise.

Hey, Armen, have you ever posted anonymously in the comments section of your blog? Hasn't there been at least one time when you've posted a comment anonymously that you'd rather not have your name attached to? Not once?

Anyway, I think it's a fair trade-off. Armen gets to host the best Boalt discussion blog, have the ultimate soap box, and get all the fame, and the anonymous posters get the satisfaction of injecting unchecked honesty into Boalt discussion. We wouldn't want to disrupt this tender equilibrium.

Somebody said they got their rank this morning from Ortiz. Anyone else? Are they giving out one a day?

I have never and I will not ever post anything without having my name attached. I prefer to stand by every thing I say. Some don't and that's all fine with me. The whole point of this is for me to know who out there is reading. I don't want anyone to give up anonymity in their other comments. I just want to know who the readers are out there. Are you a 1L, Jesse, hot pre-law tri delt?

On the subject of rank, there's an interesting article on today's NYT.com entitled "Schools Avoid Class Ranking, Vexing Colleges." Check it out.

It's about high schools that have stopped providing colleges with class rank. The college's response, much like the firms' approach during OCIP, is to create a spreadsheet and do their own rankings of students. John Steele has mentioned this. It's the judges, though, who have the power to demand rank, and Boalt acquiseces.

Oh don't get me started on HS rankings. No offense to the two Boalties from NoHo's highly gifted magnet, but you all screwed me over in the rankings. I'm still bitter about that one.

There is no reason Boalt needs to rank students, including the demands of judges. For instance, Columbia does not provide a class rank, ever. Boalt's ranking students makes no sense given the aims of our unusual grading system. And it's not like judges will stop hiring Boalt students if we get rid of the class rank.

Armen, I almost told you that I read your blog, but then I lost my nerve - I guess I was afraid that you would somehow make fun on me on here. But I've realized that this is not one of the make-fun-of-everyone blogs and I commend all of the boaltalk writers for that - it makes me take this blog at least half-way seriously even though there seems to be a tie-in between the commentators here and the Boalt Briefs. Anonymously yours...

anon at 11:59--

First, I agree that considering how anonymous everyone here is (and I'm staying that way), people are pretty nice, especially compared to all those other asshole law blogs out there.

But as for Boalt Briefs--how can there be a tie-in? Briefs is written by one person--let's just call him Bartin Shite--so any tie-in is just that one person deciding to either comment or not. Any other references to Briefs is just because various commenters find it funny and want to reference it, or because Jesse gets pissy and demands that Armen let him respond to something.
