Show Us Your Cards
I don't want to create this thread, I really don't. I didn't want to create the OCIP one either for similar reasons...I hate breeding further competition. But there is a part of me that finds the sharing of information useful. So with that said, here is the rankings thread.
Here are the rules and assumptions.
1. It can be useful for 2Ls, 1Ls, and incoming to know what grades roughly place you where. It is no secret from the registrar's own website that 3.4 to 3.6 translates roughly to top 10% for Order of the Coif purposes.
2. If you want to anonymously post your ranking, please kindly also add the "GPA" as computed by the registrar for O of C purposes if you would like. This is nothing more than an attempt to recreate the spreadsheet that DO has. ("GPA" = ((HH units * 5) + (H units * 3) + (P units * 2))/total units). This number serves two purposes: (a) saves me from roughly approximating it b/c I don't have relevant units for each grade a person posts and (b) gives the poster greater anonymity by not revealing specific course grades or patterns. THIS RULE IS MANDATORY AND I WILL DELETE ANY COMMENTS NOT CONFORMING TO IT. That is, if you want to reveal anything about your grades, reveal this number only. I'm proud of your AmJurs and disappointed in your Prossers, but I really don't give a rat's ass about them.
3. I still have not asked for my ranking and I am happy to see some of my classmates troubled by the sudden heart-pounding interest in rankings. Maybe it's a way to validate all the hard work you've put in. Maybe it's a way to make you feel better/worse about yourself compared to your classmates. But if this rankings crap goes to anyone's head, then they're a douche and characteristically un-Boalt.

Provided I crunched it out right, 3.9 --> top 10% of the class.
Why did I ask for the rank? I want to clerk after law school - if the J.D. is the bachelor's, I see clerking as the M.S.
The rank is also important because at most schools, law review maps directly to rank. Here it has no correlation, but if a judge expects that law reviews does map to rank and does not see law review, a negative inference is created. I need the rank to rebut that inference. And then I need a good explanation for not holding a journal position [open to suggestions!!]
Armen - great idea for a thread. You're an asset to the community. I don't know about others, but I'm still waiting for my info ...
People should also probably indicate whether they are a 2L or 3L since rank is a product of GPAs within your class.
2L, 3.78, top 10%
Any top 5% profiles?
I'm also glad some people aren't champing at the bit to get their ranks. Unless you truly want to clerk this shouldn't be such a big deal. The rush to get rankings does seem to reveal some latent gunnerish tendencies in boalties.
Any more disclosures?
As an alum who has seen lots of clerkship apps (and resumes sent to my firm, on which a lot of people seem to list their rank despite Boalt's policy against it), I can say that people around the top 5% seem to have maybe 60-65% HHs, 25-30% Hs, and 10% Ps. I have no idea what the cutoff is, however, or precisely how that would translate into the registrar's numerical formula that takes into account credit hours.
Flame. Even the low end of this distribution yields more than a 4.0.
Remember, the general rule is that the cut-off for Order of the Coif (top 10%) is 3.4-3.6.
So no more information? No more card showing? Boring.
