Weighing In

Boalt Hall 3L Class Presidential Candidates, I have one request. Make Stephen Bundy our graduation speaker. He's never done it before, and today's impromptu ballad on Erie convinced me. He's been a great teacher and entertaining colleague. And you know, you just know, that if he speaks at graduation, he'll play the guitar.

Post your thoughts on who you think the graduation speaker should be in the Comments...

I second Bundy.

He won't be pretentious and he will be funny. I've also heard (but don't know that this is true) that in his many years at Boalt he has never been selected, which is totally ridiculous. This also means it would mean a lot to him to be selected.

I know there's pressure to select someone who may be more high profile at the moment, or who is more involved with social justice issues. But there's nothing wrong with picking someone who just really cares a lot about Boalt.

Perhaps 3Ls could choose him on condition that he change the CPII final to just one test, instead of the split multiple choice/take home test.

I want John Yoo to speak.

His thoughts might be interesting, and it would be plenty entertaining to watch the protesters get nightsticked by the BPD.

Maybe we could even issue the 2Ls nightsticks and send them out amongst the protesters. Better yet the 1Ls, I think that I will like them better. I don't trust the current 1Ls with weapons. Too much spite.

senior policy advisors for gubernatorial candidates are always pricks.

Ted Olson. Boalt grad, argued many times in front of the S. Ct., close presidential friend. Need I say more?

I vote for Darry Sragow.

He was the head strategist for the California Democratic party during their takeover of the California state legislature in the mid to late 90's.

He is a brilliant and charismatic guy. He taught undergrads at Cal until they booted him for teaching too many semesters as a non-tenure track professor (union rules).

He was a lawyer before he switched to politics, so he has seen life from both side of the fence.

Lastly, from what I gathered he loves Cal (He used to fly up from LA every Thursday to teach his class and fly back every Thursday night.) and would almost certainly be willing to speak at graduation.

Actually, Sragow is back in the law now. He's at Sonnenschein Nath & Rosenthal, and was brought in last year to basically take over their West Coast government practice. He's been all over the place and is a helluva nice guy. Doubt Sarah Angel would bring him in though. She's way too lefty and he's a moderate. Also, does he really have any connection to Boalt?

Only at Boalt: The head strategist of the California Democratic party isn't left-wing enough to speak at graduation.

Fact: Bundy has never been faculty speaker, but he was the "entertainment" portion of the 2001 graduation.
