Open Dread
What's on your mind? Pissed off at the new CalMail interface? Can't tell a Hornbook from an Emmanuel's? Know any cool places to see/things to do in St. Louis? (I'll be there this weekend). Well opine away.
Also I want to publicly note that Dean H., no wait that's not anonymous enough...let's say D. Harvey goofed and didn't register for the July bar exam, so now he has to wait and take the February one. So if you don't see his name in November when results come out, you'll know why. Also when we're one person short of having the highest bar pass rate, you'll know why.

WIll grades actually be posted in mid-July (whatever that means)?
9:21, i hate you.
just got around to looking at 6/29 schedule changes when i found this gem:
"258 Estates & Trust: Change in course day/time and instructor. Now being offered Tu
6-9 with Prof. Ferguson."
for the record, i signed up for zamperini t/thu 11-12:30. ain't that some shit.
good thing i'm a 3L, and i most likely won't be attending this fucking t&e marathon, or else i'd be a wee bit miffed.
you're in luck! your faithful 0L reader is from St. Louis. :)
some things to do:
1. the old courthouse (downtown near the arch) - very pretty building in which the dred scott decision was decided
2. the anheuser-busch brewery tour - free beer!
3. restaurant - check out King Louie's in the soulard area. it's really good and at a fraction of bay area prices.
4. go up in the Arch. you know you want to.
enjoy!
Any other Boalties about to take the bar freaking out about the Bar/Bri "answer key" for the simulated essay/PT exam? According to the key, if you missed even a tiny issue, you failed. How is it that all the instructors can regale us with stories about writing UCC answers for tort questions and passing? Is Bar/Bri's grading artificially tough?
Is there a way to sort your email messages by size in Bearmail? It looks like Bearmail doesn't tell you the size of a message at all, which makes it hard to manage your account because you can't tell which messages have large attachments.
The real question is whether or not i can sort my messages based on thvgpa of thd sender. I'm busy and I need to prioritize my work
Does anyone know why we switched to the new calmail given that is equally shitty and the only difference is the color scheme?
A comment about grade reporting - what committee at Boalt is the right address for complaints about the June 16 to July 14 lag between the reporting of grades? What students serve on that committee? To whom should complaints be addressed?
I think that the grade limbo isn't as big a deal for rising 2L's (though it should still annoy them), but for 3L's trying to plan for their clerkship applications, I think the delay puts them at a significant planning disadvantage with peers from other schools. The reasons why that's the case have been discussed in depth by others on the board.
2:27, 9:34 hates you
I'm with 1:57. I'm tired of this "email neutrality" business that the administration at Berzerkley has been imposing on us. I think email inboxes should be "rationalized" to allow the market to work its magic. They can sort based on the class rank, starting salary, or net worth of the sender. I'm sick of emails from poor slackers getting equal treatment with more deserving senders. This kind of regulation creates a "dumb pipe" that will hamper the "future of the internet." Details at www.dontregulate.org.
What's really weird is BYU's California Bar pass rate is 94%.

Yes, I agree. BarBri now apparently intends to totally freak us out and send us into studying overdrive until the exam so that we're all just insanely frazzled.
And, you know, it would be nice if BarBri ever returned our graded assignments that we turn in...
As for the grades thing, I just think Boalt should get it together to ensure that people stressing about the Bar don't get notices from the State Bar about how we won't be registered for the damn exam b/c they haven't yet received proof that we graduated. Dean O's email should not be necessary--just get it right and don't get us stressed in the first place!
/back to torts
if u are concerned about grades and in the area, just go to boalt on mon. to get a transcript if grades are not posted by then online. the registrar's office told me that the updated transcripts will be available by the 10th.
fuck boalt!!! Grades are a serious issue, and if everey other law school in the country can get them out in a month than a school in the top 10 should be able to as well.
To sort email messages by size, login and go to "options" then "index order" and you'll be able to add size. Also in options, you can change display preferences to show more messages per page, change font, etc. In options - folder preferences, you can set the folder list to be indented and a bit easier to read. None of this makes the display nearly as usable as calmail's.
11:35 PM - Thanks for your help! You are an asset to the Boalt community!
I remember when they rolled out CalMail a few years ago intending to replace BearMail. The general reaction was...it's just as slow, so why the change? It's funny to see the opposite reaction now.
Glad i'm not the only one freakin' out about the BarBri grading system.
I recently received my ConLaw CGAB exam back with the following comment:
USE HEADINGS. PASS
That was the extent of the commments... Thanks BarBri - so helpful!
But at least now i'm realizing that the Performance Test has absolutely zero to do with any sort of legal reasoning or knowledge or even any pertinent skills I believed i had learned from working at a firm for 2 years, but 100% to do with determining HOW they want you to do something and then filling in a couple of sentences of random phrases as "filler".
Addendum to 10:50 a.m. Not a (current or former) Boalt student, but this seems to be the only law-related blog worth reading in the Bay Area. Keep it up!
Bar Bri graders lick ass! One girl in our bar bri class had one of her exams regraded---she went from a 2 to a 8 (10 max and 5 passing). Either the first grader didn't read the exam answer or bar bri felt pity on the chick and bumped her up.
Did anyone check out the "answer key" in the CICW for the simulated essay/PT? You failed PR if you missed the unauthorized practice of law issue? On all essays, if you didn't use subheadings a grader is entitled to fail you? This shit cannot be right... Bar/Bri sucks!
6:41-
Yah, that was BS. I honestly don't see an issue there at all - if that's the unauthorized practice of law, I know alot of paralegals, law clerks, and summer associates who should be paying bar dues!
About those bar passage rates. Yale, no surprise, is #1 at 95%. But maybe I should have gone to BYU. Apparently, my chances of passing would be higher (94% to Boalt's 87%). Or maybe the Supreme Joseph Smith (or whatever they call the grand poobah) decrees that any dumb grads are barred from taking the CA bar.
Okay, I officially hate the new calmail interface. What idiot creates a search function for the outbox that doesn't allow you to filter or search by recipient?! Apparently, I am supposed to remember the subject line of the email I sent back in March in order to be able to locate it in my Outbox. I am glad to see we're progressing!
