Hanukkah? Hanukah? Chanuk--ah, fuck it
I'm a few days late on this, but as our local newscasts so venerably report every holiday--"And to our Jewish friends..." Well, to everyone, Happy Hanukkah! Hopefully you've taken some time from studying to light up the shammas, dance the hora, and sing a song involving Aged Rocks. I also hope the season has brought you applesauce with your latkes, and dreidel spins ending in gimmel (curse you shin!).
For me, Hanukkah has always been about more than gifts and miracles involving oil (heck, I bet W. celebrates the miracle of oil way more than any Jew I know). No, for me it's really about the 3 F's: Fun, Family, and the Forced removal of religious imagery from public places such as airports. Good times!
Happy holidays to all, whatever holiday it may be! Feel free to offer your own holiday wishes!

I heartily second the third point. As a Jew and a liberal, I wish the Democrats would hurry the fuck up and just ban Christmas like they've been intimating. Bill O'Reilly says that's the plan. I say let's get on with it.
I totally object to the clear lack of separation between church and state that exists at Boalt. I walked in the other day and Dean Ortiz AND Holly Parrish wearing what appeared to be Santa Hats and/or festive holiday related antlers. Like I don't know what that means. I even thought I saw I some guy dreseed as up as a Santa helper; you know short little guy with a beard, wearing green slippers. But I was wrong on that. Turns out that was just Dean Edley.
Funny, I think I saw Santa -- big guy, always laughing, huge white beard. I snapped a foto with my cell phone:

7:55 - that's so sweet!
Isn't there an important distinction between religious holidays and their secular associations/counterparts? After all, the Easter Bunny doesn't strike me as religious, even if Easter Sunday is. Santa and Reindeer - secular. Birth of Jesus - religious. Halloween Candy - secular. All Hallows Eve - "spiritual"? Dean Ortiz AND Holly Parrish wearing Santa hats? Say it with me now.... Secular.
In the vein of arbitrary boundaries between church and state (even though I think 7:07 was kidding), I wanted to share this article:

(If you can't access it, look up "Fort Collins" in the NYT archive.)
A little frightening. I love the logic of the councilpeople, though. "If we let the Jews put up their menorah, what's next?" I can see it now -- the pagans, Scientologists and Shiites are going to be lining up around the block to put up their religious symbols in the Fort Collins town square.
