Cougars and Steamers and MILFs, Oh My

First and foremost, Boalt's proud Cleveland Steamboats (IM officials have changed our name from Steamers) are now 1-0 thanks to a default by the Social Workers. The highlight of the game: my bloody elbow and 2 RBIs. The other highlight of the game? A certain ASP badass cranking one 200-250 feet.

If you have any sense of decency, you will not read beyond this sentence. But a debate is raging in the halls of Boalt. Those who have taken, or are in Legislation may be called upon to provide their interpretative skills. A certain website that I cannot find, defines a Cougar, and then lists Stiffler's mom from American Pie and Mrs. Robinson from The Graduate as examples of Cougars. The urban dictionary definitions are here.

Some argue that those two are not Cougars. They are MILFs. The contention is that a Cougar cannot be married or have kids. Urban dictionary definitions here.

Personally, I (convincingly) argue that these two terms are the flip sides of the same coin. The core definition of a Cougar is an older woman who preys on younger men. All that no marriage/no kids stuff is superfluous. Similarly, the only core definition of MILF is just what it stands for. The emphasis, however, is on I. It's a subjective label. If she satisfies the M conditional, then beyond that there's very little that's objective about it. The Cougar label, however, can be attached by 3rd parties. Thus, the two are not mutually exclusive.

By way of illustration, Mrs. Robinson was CLEARLY a Cougar because she seduced poor old Dustin Hoffman (who's in love with Robinson's daugher, a Cal student!!!). The fact that she's a mom, doesn't mean I'd like to f*ck her. Anyway, discuss.

Do you mean to suggest that there are older women out there preying on the fine young men of Boalt Hall?

Hands off, old ladies! There's slim pickings here already without having to compete with the likes of you.

I can attest that 1L's are subject to MILF attacks as well. In fact just last week a MILF in my apartment complex bought me a prime rib dinner. For serious.

In other news, the 1L Bad News Barristers are currently 1-0-0 in their softball season, having stomped Osos in their season debut.

I can't say I've ever really put that much thought into it, but it seems like the label "cougar" is just trying to convey the idea of a "predatory" older woman looking for a younger guy. I agree with Armen that the rest is superfluous.
I also agree that MILF is subjective, whereas cougar is objective. But nothing about "MILF" says that the woman is out to seek a younger guy, so McWho, maybe you should use the term cougar if the woman sought you out (you said "attack") to buy you dinner. If she did that AND you'd like to hook up with her, then she's both. I'd also like to add that I have never heard the term cougar used in that way and find it hilarious.

Those are just my rambling thoughts.

If you are planning to enter the legal profession in the near future and work for a fancy white shoe firm, should you be posting these kinds of things on the internet under your real name for the world to see? Could doing so hurt your chances of moving up in the firm and the profession, especially if the firms is particularly conservative? What do you say Professor Steele?

more importantly, whose the asp tutor with the sweet swing? i'm betting it's martin white. sure, he doesn't look very athletically coordinated; hell, i'd be surprised if he can walk and chew gum . but he's got that gritty blue-collar work ethic. it must be a by-product of his youth, the son of a lawyer roaming the halls of san francisco's most expensive private schools.

If a firm refuses to hire someone because of a post such as OP or mine, then quite frankly, that would make me guffaw. For anyone to take this thread seriously would require a fairly extensive brain fart.

Get a sense of humor please...or maybe you just need a CILF yourself.

Anon 11:43 a.m., are you the one in charge of the scary 1L ethics orientation day that we had to do back in October? They basically told us not to post pictures of ourselves drinking, etc. because a firm might not hire us if they saw that. Some 2Ls later laughed when I told them this and said they did shots with partners at their firms.

If older women who prey on younger men are cougers, what are older men who prey on younger women called? Besides sugar daddy, I mean. And couldn't we just call the women sugar mamas?

6:29, I think there's a distinction to be made. Sugar daddies are older men who fulfill financial or material desires of younger men or women in exchange for having their own, ahem, other desires fulfilled. Likewise with sugar mamas, though I think they are a rarer breed. A cougar, by comparison, provides no fringe benefits. As for an older man who likes young women, I think the term you're looking for is "guy."

Anon 12:38 a.m., you stole the words right out of my mouth. Also, another term for men who prey on younger women? "Accepted by society"
