Best of . . . Boalt

DS has been waiting to post this question and discussion for a while. He didn't want to do it too early because he would be giving up his favorite spots. But some commentors got to it already, with respect to water fountains, and he will be finishing up his writing requirement in the library next week all alone, so it's really not a bad time to ask the question: where is your favorite ____?

Water fountain? DS has to disagree with the notion that it's the one outside Booth. That one is okay. It's cold, but it's all tucked away and it gives DS the heeby jeebies (not really sure why). His favorite water fountain isn't a fountain at all. It's the water cooler outside DE's conference room inside his suite of offices. DS has never seen another student filling up a water bottle at this cooler. The water is cold and refreshing and, best of all, water coolers dispense water faster than a water fountain. 10 seconds to fill up a nalgene. Tops. DS highly recommends it, but not until next year. And definitely not around 11:10 on Mondays and Tuesdays before DS goes to class. Honorable mention to the fountain outside the vending machines on the second floor hallway behind zeb. Cold water. Relatively student-free. The best "fountain" in the school

Bathroom? Slim pickens here. First couple of years DS was a fan of the bathroom next to the main lecture halls. Not so much anymore. If DS is at Boalt, chances are he's in the library, and he finds the library bathrooms adequate for his needs. Really, any single bathroom is preferrable to a stall type situation. But, it's always a little nervewracking to open that door and find someone waiting. He's never gotten used to that feeling. Are the women's bathrooms as terrible as the men's?

Place to study? Well, if it's dinner or lunch time, there's not much choice: it's got to be the main reading room. Other than that, he likes the study carrels in the back right room of the library -- closest to the bathrooms. He's never tried the room across from the goldberg room, but that seems pretty nice. Other than that, there really aren't many good places to study.

Those are the only categories DS can think of. Did he miss anything? Do you not agree with his, but are unwilling to give up your own secret spots for fear they'll be innundated with sleazy law students? Comment away.

You're quite brave to give up your secret water source. Also, the water fountain on the ground floor near the CDO is pretty good.

I vehemently disagree with any positive assessment of the library bathrooms. They have zero ventilation and as a result are stuffy and usually smelly. Here, again, the ground floor takes the cake: the girls bathroom near the CDO is ace.

And as far as the best place to study, on days like today it's clearly laying out on the grass behind or beside Boalt. The main reading room gets really stuffy and hot on warm days.

I like the private unisex bathrooms by the bookstore, except when I take a poop and exit, only to find a pretty girl waiting to enter after me. Very embarrassing.

The library bathrooms???? That's like pooping in a closet (not that I've ever pooped in a closet). More to the point, I find it a little weird that DS always refers to himself in the third person. Jimmy finds this habit weird and annoying. Jimmy can jump.

DS can see he's about to get ridiculed for his choice in bathrooms, so he adds this fact. He is only at school two days a week, and only requires an extended stay in a bathroom (if you catch his drift) in the morning around 9am, well before the library is crowded. That might explain why he doesn't think it smells. He gets to it before other students do.

Oh, we catch your drift DS... right around 9:15.

best bathroom at boalt? that's like asking which color pen you prefer to stab your eye with. I went to undergrad at Cal, and discovered some truely magical bathrooms and study spots. try the Moses bathrooms (men's), great view of the Campanile, or third floor of Doe, especially for the sunset. I urge you all to venture beyond our concrete disaster.

For bathrooms, gotta go with Simon Hall on the 6th or 8th floor. Nothing quite like crapping where the faculty craps.

You know, I understand ragging on the facilities. It would be nice if there were more places for group study, and the chairs are getting a very needed upgrade in the main lecture halls. But bathrooms are smelly because people do smelly things there. And, quite frankly, at least in the mens' restrooms, it doesn't help that Boalties have some irrational fear of flushing urinals.

8:58, I agree that the discussion isn't quite high intellect, but honestly, it's one of the things that, on a daily basis, reminds me that I'm no longer at a private school flush with cash. At my undergrad, the bathrooms sparkled . . .

Best water fountain is indeed near booth.

Re: urinals. Because one flush doesn't flush them. The urinals are themselves defective. If you care about your fellow Boalt men, flush once, then hold down and flush again. Don't just jiggle the handle and walk away. It works at home, but not here.

best vending machine: the diet coke machine near mofo and goldberg. that thing takes ANY dollar bill you shove in it, no matter how wrinkled or folded.

Best secret passage:

Third floor, from the BJIL office along a corridor that makes three 90-degree turns, drops a few inches at one point, and then goes down a few stairs. There are mirrors at the turns so you can see who you're about to bump into. You can then go down one flight of stairs to come out behind the library (on the way you see words of wisdom pinned to a door--they change every once in a while), or two flights to the lecture halls. Walking this way feels like the opening credits of "Get Smart," and it's a great way to avoid getting capped while playing the OC Superspy game.

Best place to sleep? The only semi-reasonable thing I've found is the mofo lounge.

I like to sleep on the floor of DE's office, curled up snug at his feet. When he's gone I sometimes take over the chair and desk.
