Speaking of quotes, "I'm not going to get into a name-calling match with somebody who has a 9 percent approval rating." -- Sen. Harry Reid responding to Dick Cheney's frothing at the mouth.

Weird - I saw that "9% approval rating" quote on Salon.com - but all the other news outlets I can find render the quote like this:
"I'm not going to get into a name-calling match with the administration's chief attack dog."
See here, for example: http://abcnews.go.com/Politics/wireStory?id=3073925
Doesn't have quite the same "zing". I wonder if he said both of them - or if a blogger mixed quotes, or took poetic license...
Does Cheney have a 9 percent approval rating? I thought it was at least 12 or 12 percent. He's in Spiro Agnew territory, regardless.
I saw the dog one of cnn.com. Either way, I found the comment somewhat hypocritical and therefore amusing.
Cheney is the greatest example I have ever seen of someone truely and utterly destroyed by the media.
You may think he sucks at his job, but you have to admit, we haven't heard one good thing about him since he became VP. Even Bush gets the occaisional nod.
McWho,
Did you ever consider the possibility Cheney hasn't done a single thing since taking office to merit positive coverage by the media? Either way, I found your comment about Cheney being "the greatest example I have ever seen of someone truely and utterly destroyed by the media" to be way more than somewhat hyberbolic and therefore amusing.
I have considered and discarded that theory.
One easy example is that Cheney was the person that gave the order to ground all aircraft following September 11, not Bush. I agreed with that.
I'm not going to list more here. However the fact that he has been a vice president that has done ANYTHING while in office is in itself an accomplishment. The guy is smart, like I said, if you disagree with his views it is one thing, but given his goals I doubt very much you could do a better job.
Since you claim that he has done nothing to benefit the country in the years he has been around (not including his times in congress, as SecDef, and other positions) then the hyperbole comment is easily neutralized. Again, another hypocritical comment.
Wait a minute, now I'm not saying you're wrong, but can you cite somewhere that says Cheney gave the order to ground aircraft? My 9/11 history may be hazy, but I'm fairly certain the director of the FAA gave that order, whereas Cheney gave the order to SHOOT any civilian aircraft that weren't responding.
See the difference? Take charge of a situation vs. kill kill kill.
Yes, Cheney sure accomplished a lot in his political career. For instance, he freaking voted to not have a holiday honoring MLK, Jr. What a guy.
If you ever want a good laugh/cry, look up his voting record. No, seriously. Do it.
And yes, maybe he did do things as a VP. Horrible things, but things nonetheless. But apparently it's the "doing" that counts.
Sorry Armen, you are correct, thats what I was thinking of.
I still agree (even though its a tough call to have to make.) And it still is a take charge kind of situation. What if 93 had been about to crash into the capitol building as planned?
The speaker in our disasters and the law class was the source. Anyone in that class remember his name? A tiny bit of research would be enough, since he is the dean of the public policy program here. But i'm lazy.
4:53: Honestly for someone to say that he did NOTHING good is just to not take the time to argue that overall, you feel he was a bad VP. I really don't care if you hate him; the vast majority of Americans do. I just pointed out that the media has never given him a shot regardless. And since we get our info from the media, maybe you should at least think before discounting any positive opinion of things he has done.
I've talked to several people that have met with him on multiple occaisions. Very positive opinions of him. does that mean I should love him? No. But maybe that means that when you read an opinion article saying he is evil, you should do a bit more work on it yourself.

Wait a minute, you're the one who's making a claim here. No one else. You claimed that but for the media, Cheney's not THAT bad (whatever that means). Is this a bit like saying the media isn't reporting on positive news from Iraq? Oh if only the reported about the new playground halliburton built for Elementary School no. 25 in Baghdad. THEN people would support the war. Conversely they shouldn't report that the playground was blown up a week later by a car bomb. That just screws things up.
You know, like reporting that the VP has an inner circle that meddles in the affairs of other executive branches at unprecedent levels screws up the perception of Cheney as the lovable, charming guy who values all policy options equally, doesn't let politics influence him, etc. etc. etc. Just ask all the people in his inner circle...you know, the only ones with any meaningful access. (Or maybe ask Pat Leahy).
Anyway, I'm yapping. I think this Joe Klein piece in Time says it best.
Well I'm not attempting to say that he is a great guy (or even that he isn't THAT bad.) My claim is that the media has villainized him beyond whatever totally valid criticism he should get.
Iraq gets bad press. And when something good happens, it gets good press. Not so much lately, but it did at one point.
Cheney just never gets good press.
Trying to argue he is a decent VP is beyond the scope I'm willing to put into this thread. Needless to say, it would take a decent amount of research/creativity.
McWho is the greatest example I have ever seen of someone truely and utterly destroyed by the commenters on this thread.
You may think he sucks as a blogger, but you have to admit, we haven't heard one good thing about his comment since he posted it on this thread. Even Tom Fletcher gets the occassional nod.
Are you kidding me McWho? Every time Cheney's heartrate jumps a beat he gets good press. I think it's a little one-sided to say he has only been villainized by the press. There's no better news coverage than a blood clot to distract from the serpentine workings of his office.
8:16 - That is a truly spectacular comment - in fact, it totally redeemed this thread, which had gotten stale fast. Allow me to cyber-shake your hand.
Thanks Mad J.D., I'm happy to brighten your day. *Accepts cyber-handshake and reciprocates.*
