The Magic School Bus

Well it was bound to happen. I (and at least one other law student) were in an accident while on the 51. Now I know what you're thinking, but this wasn't the driver's fault. We got hit by a beer truck while stopped on Ellsworth and Durant. It was more like the truck tried to get by the bus, totally misjudged how far the bus's ass was sticking out, trailer hit the back left corner of the bus, and truck driver kept moving until a 3-4 foot hole opened up on the side of his trailer (that's how I knew it was a beer truck..he had bottles and kegs of Pilsner).

Later in the day, I saw the truck driver making beverage deliveries in a tiny 8 footer. Heh. While I'm on the subject, Berkeley people (esp. the students) are the biggest violators of the "give up your seat" rule. What's so complicated about a 22-year old guy giving up his seat to the elderly?

Any other mass transit horror stories? We want the admits to feel scared shitless right off the bat.

Horror stories? I once took the subway from Silverlake to Hollywood. It was cheaper, faster, quieter, more convenient, less polluting, and less of a hassle than driving and parking. But I also endured snickering and social opprobrium for weeks from my Los Angeles friends. It was horrible! Next time, I'll try to blend in by spending more money to take longer to get somewhere.

I'll give up my seat when I get a formal request and see picture ID. I wouldn't want to judge a book by its cover.

right on 7:26PM. Also, nowadays 65 is the new 50. Plenty of fit and active "seniors" who are in better shape than stressed out law students who carry 20lbs of books on their backs.

Here's another 51 story...

I'm minding my own business (sandwiched between annoying Berkeley high school students and the usual crazy people on the bus) when all of the sudden we stop and see that the driver of the 51 bus across the street is having a physical fight with a passenger outside 7-11. I'm talking a full on, screaming/yelling match and fist fight between a female driver and a male passenger (it was a pretty even match, I might add).

More exciting than my usual commute.

My 51 "horror story".

I take it all the way to Alameda. One day I naively stepped on that bus at 2:50, which meant that about 30 minutes later, the bus was filled with Oakland Tech High School Students. The noise is irritating, but normally wouldn't be too bad. Except that day, two female students got into a shouting match, which became a fist fight right next to me.

After being elbowed in the side of the head a couple times, since the bus was so crowded there wasn't any place to move, I ALWAYS wait until at least 5pm, just to be safe.
