Journey to the End of the East Bay

In the previous thread, Patrick asks:

"I am in incoming 0L who just leased an apartment on Durant, near Shattuck. Does anyone know where I can got good and hammered within walking distance, for cheap?"

Excellent, excellent question, Patrick. Beckett's might be your best bet, on Shattuck, but also try out Raleigh's on Telegraph. Albatross is a bit farther (on San Pablo), but is my personal favorite (fun board games), and Triple Rock (Shattuck @ Hearst) is chill but good. Blake's (Telegraph) and Kip's (Durant) are best if you prefer the 18-year-old scene. Any other suggestions? Those are the usual suspects--anything more interesting?

Let's use Patrick's question as a jumping off point. What can someone new to Berkeley do to have some fun? I'm thinking more of nighttime fun (i.e. bars), but suggestions for daytime fun are welcome too (hikes, parks, etc.). And no need to tell 0Ls that the real fun is on the other side of the Bay--I think everyone already knows that.

Berkeley is sort of underwhelming as a drinking venue, especially if you went to a big state school for undergrad. Prepare to lower your expectations a bit, Patrick. It can get a bit sleepy around these parts after 9 pm; with the exception of the half a dozen bars already mentioned, there isn't much to do. BARTing to the city is expensive (like $7 round trip) and you won't find cheap drinks there either. And, of course, if you're BARTing back, you have to leave kind of early. My suggestion is bring your car, use it often to go to the liquor store and make your own party at home. At least that way you won't be dodging shit on the sidewalks.

Don't forget to hit up Thalassa, a fun pool hall with average priced drinks. There's no sign on the outside, just a florescent martini glass in the window. It's on Shattuck between Durant and Channing, and usually has a good crowd.

Berkeley is a great place if you're a beer aficionado. Lots of good brew on tap everywhere, and Jupiters and Triple Rock brew their own.

During the school year, many bars are quite lively until closing time (2am).

Berkeley's also a great place if you're into the dive scene. The Graduate and Ben & Nick's are two of my favorites.

If you're looking for $12 pomegranate infused martinis with essence of hibiscus, you should've gone to NYU or UCLA.

So, what's going to happen to this blog now that the 3L founders have graduated? Armen and T-Fletch, are you fading away?

Did anyone mention the Down Low? Great music, fine ass ... though there does seem to be a lot of roofie in their drinks, of late.

Definitely hit up Jupiter- One of my absolute favorite Berkeley pasttimes is rolling into Jupiter around 8ish on a warm night, sitting out on their back patio with a bunch of friends by the fire pits eating awesome pizza and having 2 or 5 or 8 beers... ahhhhh....

The Down Low is a disgusting pit. It's in a basement, stuffy, and the night we had bar review there had to wait forever for a drink. It's a sketchy place.

if by sketchy you mean everyone there isn't white..

The down low is sketchy because the facilities are dirty and the clientele, regardless of race, is generally of the predatory variety. That said, the drinks are dirt cheap and I love the place.

kips is a delight. super cheap drinks ($1 beers please!), carpet on the dance floor. the "rising 2L" girls looove kips.

It says in the newest BBB: "Attention 2L and 3L students: You are now required to complete you Writing Requirement by the end of your
fifth semester, so please plan accordingly."

Are they joking? They're telling us now, as we're just entering our 5th semester? How the hell can we plan accordingly when they don't tell us this shit?

8/18/2007 12:36 AM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

WTF?!?!?

There are better ways to introduce a new requirement than to back door it in the BBB two days before classes start.

I assume the new writing requirement rule will be enforced as strictly as the rule that says you must have completed professional responsibility by the end of 2L year.

8/18/2007 11:44 AM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

How strictly IS that enforced? If I don't do it will anyone notice?

8/18/2007 1:01 PM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

It won't be enforced at all. Last semester the only ethics class offered was a 30 person seminar on "transnational ethics" (whatever the heck that is), so many of us were forced to wait until 3L year.

Are they sending our clerkship apps out individually, or putting all the apps for a single judge in the same envelope? I have a feeling it's the latter, in which case we're getting ripped off..

Another random question: What is appropriate attire for firm receptions? Suits? Bus. casual? If suits, should they be skirt suits for females?

8/22/2007 4:53 PM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

if you are coming from OCIP (i.e. a 2L), wear a suit. I once went to a post-interview social not in my suit and was the only one there not in my suit. *NOT* a good idea.

if you are a 1L interested in scoping out the lay of the land in the donor lobby receptions, wear whatever. No big deal.

If you are a woman interviewing, where whatever kind of suit you want. do you really want to work at a place that will ding you if you're not wearing a skirt? I didn't think so.

PS go to the hospitality suites if you want more info or didn't get an interview. I know my firm is sending two great boalties to our hospitality suite.

I disagree with the comment about wearing a suit to post-OCIP events. I saw business casual at most evening receptions. For women, I saw everything ranging from suits to cute skirts and flats.

Also, if you're invited to dinner the evening of your interview they will generally make a suggestion about what to wear, and will often say casual dress is fine. For women, this could be a skirt and sweater, slacks and a nice-ish top, etc.

But in the end, it really doesn't matter. I was invited to a dinner with a couple other Bolaties. The interviewer said to dress casual and one of the callback invitees wore a suit. He was the only one in a suit, and it was commented upon by the interviewers. In the end though, he got an offer an I didn't. So really, what you wear doesn't matter.

I think ladies should wear skirts. As a somewhat recent grad and soon to be first time interviewer, I am looking forward to some smartly dressed and sexy Boalt dames.

I would especially appreciate it if you wear particularly short skirts and high heels. Also make sure that your lipstick is really glossy and preferably bright red. Then lick your lips during the interview...often.

In case you couldn't tell, I'm not really an interviewer, but I think that some interviewers probably think these things.

So what kind of success did people have last year getting interviews through open sign ups? Will people really cancel their interviews with firms high in demand?
