The Dean O Bomb

Wow. Speechless.

Dean O has announced that this will be her last year at Boalt. Beginning next year she will be the new Assistant Dean of Students Services and Director of Admissions at the brand-new law school at UC Irvine.

Dear students:

I want to share some news with you: I will be leaving Boalt at the end of this academic year in order to become Assistant Dean of Students Services and Director of Admissions at the brand-new law school at UC Irvine. I never thought I'd leave Boalt, but the prospect of being a member of the inaugural administrative team that will actually build a new institution, under the leadership of Dean [EC], was just too wonderful to resist.
I have had a fantastic ten years at Boalt. It is primarily you -- the students -- who make this place so wonderful. I have loved working with you all, individually and in groups. The energy and passion you bring to our community is something I have grown to require in order to feel fulfilled. It is my hope that what I have learned from you, what I have learned about attempting to create an institutional atmosphere that nurtures personal and academic growth, is something that I will be able to bring to bear at Irvine as we build the law school, and as we recruit and admit the first few classes.

I will always cherish my years at Boalt. I leave without regrets, but with a sadness about not being here with you any longer. I hope that those of you who find yourselves in Southern California will be sure to come look me up. Even though I will be at another school, you will always be my students!

Fondly,

Dean O

Wow. First the departure of HP, and now DO. I don't know who has replaced HP or who will replace DO, but those are big shoes to fill. They both embraced Boalt's quirky nature and ran with it. I certainly hope the replacement isn't a crusty, bitter, old dean.

This is really sad. I understand the desire to work with a new institution, but Boalt is becoming a new institution in so many ways. I feel like our student services department is about to go downhill fast. I certainly hope P doesn't get a promotion. FYI M*ndi M*sliwiec replaced HP. I don't much about her though.

1) nice 10:53 - really classy

2) Agreed w/ Armen - the head honcho in the Student Services office determines in many ways the tone/nature of Boalt.

3) I didn't ever get the chance to interact with HP. She did seem nice. But what I can say is that MM has been great every time I've stopped by. She's good at knowing exactly what's needed and actually following through. Plus, she's always cool to talk to.

4) props to 11:22, whoever you are.

TJ - what the eff is your problem? Why does it annoy you so much that there is another Boalt related blog out there? if you really wanted to promote the dissemination and discussion of useful information, yo ushould be applauding that someone found out how to access the fall 2008 course listings.

methinks you're just bitter that you have competition.

Dean O pulls up stakes, and less than three hours later, the infighting begins!!

lol@TJ giving "props" to a useless post that links to a Rick Astley video, and chastising 10:53 for posting info on how to access the fall 2008 course list that everyone's been bitching about not being available.

If it's competition, why should we tolerate you hijacking our threads? You have your forum, now use it. I've let the spam (and that's what they are) continue because comments in response like 11:22 actually crack me up. But if you're going to get nasty about criticism when you're the one spamming, then well, "sell crazy somewhere else. We're all stocked up in here."

Okay, you can actually view the full course list here.

That being said, let's get back to Dean O leaving. Is it the end of the world? What do we want in a replacement? Discuss...

Ummmm Armen isn't that a little bit hypocritical? You link to other blogs, like The Shark, and permit others like John Steele to post "spam" (inasmuch as posting something off-topic but relevant to Boalt is "spam") on your blog. I second 11:46 -- you guys have a personal vendetta against BLB.

Apparently it doesn't run both ways, because you're on the blogroll over there.

My suggestion: Get over it!

FYI, I put them on the blogroll over here quite some time ago . . . so please chill out. This discussion is making ME look bad.

My frustration was with the time and place - not with the existence of "competition." The comment went up within seconds of the Dean O post. I was really hoping for some discussion about Dean O - and I think she deserves it. My "props" to 11:22 were intended to highlight this frustration and appreciate him/her making fun of 10:53.

Regarding the course schedule - you'll notice from BLB's comments that people are finding errors. There's no mass conspiracy on the part of the administration to withhold information that's already determined. The real course schedule should be available tomorrow. How about everyone sit back and relax a bit - contemplate how we can avoid those amongst us (starting with 11:46 and 11:49) from turning us into Hastings.

Call it whatever you want, but this blog isn't your personal RSS feed. And no, me linking to other blogs isn't the same as someone anonymously doing it. If the authors of that blog want to be on the blogroll here, they're welcome to e-mail me as have the other Boaltie bloggers. This isn't a "forum for the cavalier." I suggest you get over it.

How sad. HP and Dean O were (and are, duh) very special people and a great team to help navigate Boalt and Berkeley bureaucracy (I'm looking at you, MJK and minions, for example). Glad to know that HP's replacement is keeping up her good work--having a good person in that spot will probably help recruit someone excellent for Dean O's job. Although I can't imagine anyone else ever walking the halls of Boalt with Dean O's kindness and energy for everything.
Perhaps Irvine could poach from non-sister-UC schools, mmkay?

For those who have not had the pleasure, M*ndi is great. Friendly. Witty. Efficient.

And, she has been spotted a time or two at various Berkeley watering holes, which suggests she actually has a life, too.

Anyone know the age of M*nd*?

If, you know, someone were interested in that sort of thing...

I know MM's age, and NO, I'm not going to tell you and NO, you should not ask her out (I know that's what you were thinking). It's weird and uncomfortable. Feel free to admire MM from a distance.

Serious question: Is Dean O going to Irvine because Chemerinsky offered her partner a professor gig there?

2:27,

Do not listen to 3:02. If you want, just go for it. Ask her out. If its weird or uncomfortable or she thinks you're too far apart in age, she'll tell you.

Godspeed, good sir.

It was meant as an archaic expression of farewell, not a gendered term. Gosh, you can't say anything old fashioned here at Boalt, er, the Berkeley School of Law...

Is there anyone who could get promoted from within to take Dean O's spot.... Like, Oh Professor Bob B?

4/11/2008 11:06 AM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

do you really think her job would be a promotion? really? tenured prof means rarely in the building, free to come and go, gets the entire exam periods free, but for grading? dean of students is around daily, deals with student tragedies of all kinds, and when profs are largely checking out, they have the worst lot in the building. no thanks!

I certainly miss HP, but has anyone considered that this latest announcement might be a positive change?

I like 'quirky' as much as the next UCB student, and I know she is largely well inentioned, but my only exchanges with her have been a little contrived and forced and ultimately unhelpful, neutral at best kind of thing. Her approach seems....outdated or something. I'm just saying.
