Palin on Foreign Policy
I don't think I was brought on staff here to provide political analysis, but I just couldn't resist this. The first in Charles Gibson's three-part interview with Sarah Palin aired last night. Some highlights:
1. She clearly does not know what "The Bush Doctrine" is. To be fair, neither does Prsident Bush.
2. There is an Alaskan island from which you can actually see Russia. Good enough for me!
3. My personal favorite was her response when asked to sum up what experience she's gained from living so close to the former reds:
"Well, I'm giving you that perspective of how small our world is and how important it is that we work with our allies to keep good relations with all of these countries, especially Russia. We will not repeat a Cold War. We must have good relations with our allies, pressuring also, helping us to remind Russia that it is their benefit, also, a mutually beneficial relationship for us all to be getting along."
Well said, Sarah! Would you also like to tell us about how you personally believe that the U.S. Americans need to provide maps for the Iraq?
I'm really not bashing Sarah Palin as a person. Why should the governor of Alaska have to consider the Bush doctrine? Or Georgia's admission to NATO? Or U.S. military operations in Pakistan? She shouldn't. Neither should I! But neither of us should be vice president.

Actually, you know what? Maybe I should be vice president. I am awesome, after all.
Maybe. But you'd look too fugly in those librarian glasses to get my vote.
That was unbelievable. She was pretty awful the first night, thankfully she got some coaching and said NOTHING the second night.
On one hand, I don't really believe there has been a well articulated "Bush Doctrine," and that question was unfair. On the other hand, someone really sharp and intelligent like Hillary would have killed that question. Obama should have picked Hillary. She would have destroyed her if they went head to head.
11:40, I don't know how old you were in 2002, but there most certainly was and is a well articulated Bush Doctrine. You can read it here. For the first time in over 50 years, the United States altered its policy of containment (the Truman Doctrine) to preemptive strike.
Where have Boalties been getting clerkship interviews/offers?
1:14 -- all over! this week was perhaps the most draining of my life (8 interviews in 6 cities), but ultimately rewarding. My big advice for people in future years is personalized cover letters. The judge I ultimately chose said he decided to interview me because my cover letter mentioned visiting the city he sits in as a kid; even something that much of a stretch still gives the judge a reason to pull you out of the pile.
7:48, classy move, didn't answer the question and yet still managed to give yourself a big pat on the back despite the fact that most people are still desperately holding out for a single interview. I'm rampantly speculating as to who you are right now, and I'm really good at this.
7:48, you're nowhere near funny enough to be joking, and yet you are also too pleased with yourself to be serious. Are you even real? Ugh.
"Bridge to nowhere" would've been a good win phrase in 1L Twartz bingo.
whoa, wasn't meaning to throw salt in any wounds. sorry to add stress during an already stressful time.
at the same time, I'm proud of the many boalties who do have clerkships now lined up for next year and it makes me a little sad that the vibe around campus (and on this blog) seems to be that people can't mention their successes without looking like jerks. the collective accomplishments of your classmates shouldn't be met with hostility -- they reflect well on the school and add value to all of our degrees. and to that end, I wish people waiting to hear back or planning to apply next year all the best of luck.

1:32 remembers Twartz Bingo! My life is fulfilled!
At least three Boalt 3Ls got clerkships on the 9th Circuit, probably more that I don't know about. And in various district courts on the east coast.
