Commencing World's Longest Wince, 6pm

It could be really, delightfully ugly tonight. In fact it already IS ugly, based on intel from the CBS "presidential questions" series.

----------
[UPDATE (Armen): In honor of Sen. McCain's love of gambling, I propose a Palin Pick 'Em contest. In your opinion, what is the easiest question that Palin cannot answer? I'm talking in general, but you can limit it to tonight's debate if you want. I honestly can't decide between, "What's the square root of 49?" and "What's the capital of Canada?"]

You tell me, Mr. Idaho. Ok Ok, I'll save the Idaho bashing for 6 pm.

You better save the Idaho bashing for never!

I'm going to donate $10 for every one of the following that she says:
1. "I'm the governor with the highest approval rating in the country."
2. "I'm like Joe-sixpack".
3. "It's patriotic to pay taxes" (making fun of Biden).
4. "I'm just a hockey mom".
5. "People cling to their bibles and guns" (making fun of Obama).

If she says all five, I'll donate $100.

She isn't doing too badly so far, but her tone is off. Biden looks pretty good so far.

So far, I've heard joe six pack, hockey mom, and patriotic to pay taxes from Palin.

Biden is doing a great job of speaking to the camera/Ifill and not Palin, and talking only about McCain. Keep it up Biden!

-- "Darn right."

-- Biden is a bit too verbose for the electorate, no?

-- The CNN "Uncommitted Ohio Voters" tracker is interesting. Biden is killing with the women, while Ohio uncommitted men seem to be RNC platform committee members.

Palin does not want to argue about the cause of climate change.

And that would be because she doesn't believe in global warming, right?

Holy shit, let bankruptcy courts adjust the principle of a person's mortgage? Craziness. I can't believe Palin implied that McCain agrees with that.

Biden is not bad, but he is talking waaayyy too long. Makes me sleepies.

"How are we going to get there to positively affect the impacts."

I love how Biden answers a question about bankruptcy for mortgage-strapped citizens and she completely dodges responding and goes into a rant about energy. The moderator should've called her out!

There is no way to save a woman who is proud of the fact that her party chants "Drill Baby Drill".

She also came very close to saying people CHOOSE their sexual orientation. Very close.

She says "nucular" I was already on the edge, that just pushed me over...

10/02/2008 6:39 PM
Blogger Toney said...

My wife caught "nucular" too. I love it.

Also, Palin was SO CLOSE to saying "cling to their bibles and guns". Anyone else catch that?

I think they are both doing pretty good, both better than I expected. For anyone watching it on CNN, what's up with Rollins' tab? I mean he has her at 18+ and 0-?

It really bugs me that Palin speaks in the passive voice all the time. Is that too-lawyerlike of me?

WTF was that comment about too much fingerpointing to the back for a ticket that believes in change? How the hell do you measure change?

10/02/2008 6:55 PM

From his first "answer," Biden spends about half a sentence pretending to respond and then switches into speaking points. That's good politics.

How do you all think Palin's sarcasm is coming across? I can't tell if it's effective or not.

Overshadowed by her stupidity.

I don't think any of her answers are effective. Actually, they're laughable. But I dislike her so much and think she is an absolute idiot that I don't know if this stuff resonates with the rest of the country. God I hope not.

Hmm, a little bit of Ludacris in her. "You know government, just get out of my way."

Oh man, I'm sorry I missed Armen's question game. Instead I'll go with the easiest question she DID manage to flub:

"Can you tell the voters about a time your views changed?"

with as low as the expectations were of her, it's hard to say that tonight's major plot-line is that Palin came away with a big victory.

She is the victor because she didn't fall on her face when everyone expected her to? This isn't physical therapy, T-ball, or a second grade field trip to the ice rink. This is a presidential election. What a weird world.

10/02/2008 11:48 PM
Blogger Patrick Bageant said...

Should clarify that I agree with 11:41. I just think it's f-ed up.

What's even more f-ed up is that her strategy for not falling down (which as far as I could tell was to act like a self-pulling republican Krusty the Clown talking doll, with about six stock lines, a smile and a folksy wink) probably worked with some people. So much for the old "look presidential" prereq.

It all makes you wonder how well someone like Hitler would poll if you put him next to a running mate with a cute face, folksy drawl and a wink.

10/03/2008 9:38 AM
Blogger Unknown said...

You mean the kind of poll numbers that get neighboring countries to throw you a parade when you invade them?

Seriously, what's the point of a statement like that other than to demonize McCain? Don't get me wrong, I he's the correct choice, but Hitler he is not.

The Hitler comparison is disrespectfully overused in our political discourse. Here too, its inappropriate.

10/03/2008 1:26 PM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

I think it's unfair to compare McCain to Hitler. For starters, Hitler was a great speaker.

10/03/2008 3:04 PM
Blogger Matt Berg said...

My comment was meant to mock the lack of thought and foresight of the American voting populace, not to compare McCain to anyone. McCain would have to have a clear, consistent position or personality before one could begin to compare.

10/03/2008 5:46 PM
Blogger Toney said...

Yeah, McCain wasn't being compared to Hitler there. That comment was appropriate. As Matt said, the point was to show that a folksy drawl and a wink could raise anyone's numbers.
