Spooky Thought of the Week: Nightclub Boalt

If you get claustrophobic or don't want to feel creeped out, don't read this.

Over the last week, workers have sheetrocked all doorways to the courtyard, which is essentially every south- and east-facing door in Boalt Hall. I think they've covered a few windows as well.

What would happen if there were a fire? Would people be able to get out?

(You read it anyway, didn't you? Of course you did.)

While I had the same thought when I first saw the doors shutdown, but I'm willing to bet that the school consulted the fire marshall before shutting down the doors. So if you have any faith in that... well... it should be ok right?

Although it seems like a drastic change, this is a CA building with a lot of doors because air handling isn't an issue. If this was a northern building where heating expenses tend to force builders to have fewer doors, the blocked exits may be an issue.

This was my initial thought as well. However, the only blocked exit that didn't have an immediate and clear alternative is the one in the lobby outside of the old locker room.

To remedy this, the school has already installed a number of new fire exit signs that direct people to the exit through Booth.

So while we have less exits, there are certainly a sufficient number.

But as far as fires go, I don't think DE would be too upset if the whole place went up in a ball of flames (assuming nobody got hurt, of course). He'd finally be able to build a comprehensive new facility "that could carry us into the next generation and would appropriately place us on the same level as our peers..." haha

yeah, according to Berring (who's on the building committee), they consulted very intensively with the fire marshal. boalt (before the sheetrocking) had an absurd number of exits, way more than the fire marshal requires. they figure that the hallways are wide and there are plenty of open doors still, so we're fine.

still, my own personal claustrophobia is setting in...

What Boalt really needs is a good 7.5 when the place is deserted. Bring it down in a cloud of dust - with no damage to the Robbins Collection, of course.

I had the exact same though, and despite what the fire marshall said, there are certain locations that you would be hard pressed to find an exit.

Another thing of note - has anyone noticed that the tiles of several classrooms are missing? When I decide to pay attention in class, it makes it very difficult when the other classes are just yapping away.

How are students notified about Order of the Coif, and when are those notifications sent out?

Was anyone else freaked out by the weird dude who walked into con law this morning?

To 3:03 — which weird dude do you mean? There were two, one white and one black. Both old and confused looking.

On the plus side, there probably aren't too many Great White fans at Boalt. Too soon?

You people are dumb. Matt Damon can break a path for us through the plaster (maybe even through the concrete).
