The Distinguished Gentleman*

Following a weekend thumping of my beloved Bruins, Monday brought more bad news with the conviction of former Bruin, Sen. Ted Stevens (R-AK). Aside from being a Bruin, the Senator spoke at Boalt in 2007 I believe. With that said, I cannot hide my glee that such an opponent of environmental regulation may finally be out of office.

Substantively, I'm a bit surprised by the verdict. I'm not a public corruption law expert, but I know the mental state required for false reporting is "knowingly." David Rosen, like Sen. Stevens, took the stand and denied that he ever knowingly filed false reports. The jury believed Rosen, but not Stevens.

* One of the best lines from that movie:

Thomas Jefferson Johnson: Terry, tell me something. With all this money coming in from both sides, how does anything ever get done?
Terry Corrigan: It doesn't. That's the genius of the system.

When McPalin loses, what is the over/under on Caribou Barbie landing Stevens' spot?

Here's the scenario:

Stevens' name will still appear on the Alaska ballot even if he resigns. If he, by some chance, still wins, Alaska law doesn't allow Palin to appoint a replacement Senator. Instead, Alaska has a make-up election within 90 days. Assuming McPalin loses on November 4, Palin can run in that election. And if that happens, I'd for sure put my money on that Caribou Barbie dominating in that election.

However, in my opinion, the more likely scenario is that the voters in Alaska aren't THAT ignorant and Stevens loses whether he resigns or not. In that situation, I think Palin's going to run in 2010 for Murkowski's spot. I'd say she's still got a good chance at winning, so long as the Alaskans forget about the fact that she was also found to have committed certain ethical violations.

Oh, and in other election news, Paddy's Power, Ireland's largest bookmaker, has already called the Presidential Election in Obama's favor. KNOCK ON WOOD YOU IRISH A-HOLES!!!

I don't mean to be a Debbie Downer, but isn't an Irish bookmaker calling something in your favor a bit like getting a kiss from an Italian crime boss?

I can't help but say, with Stevens's connection to Boalt, I think this discussion shows rather poor taste.

Stevens is elected to national office and now a jury has found him guilty of 7 felony counts. I also disagree vehemently with his views on nearly everything. That's all this post reflects. You're the one bringing in what I intentionally left out.
