The Global Economic Meltdown Hits Home

BHSA sent an e-mail to student organizations explaining how Berkeley is requiring additional information from BHSA before funds already requested by student groups will be distributed. Apparently they imposed these new requirements post-hoc, which has caused delays in the usual funding schedule. I don't know about the rest of you, but my journal bears the bulk of its costs early in the semester, not to mention the backlog of personal receipts that need to be reimbursed. The delay is problematic. Also, this seems a little shady to me, and is not a good indicator for the future. I guess it might be time for our student orgs to tighten their belts.

The BHSA e-mail after the jump.

Dear Student Organization Leaders,

I am writing to communicate the status of BHSA funding to Boalt student organizations and journals. Last semester, BHSA reviewed all student organization and journal funding proposals and allocated funds through our typical procedure. However, the University of California Berkeley, Procurement Services Office, has refused to disburse funding to student organizations and journals.

Our BHSA Treasurer has been informed that UC intends to impose additional financial filing requirements before funds can be distributed to BHSA and the numerous Boalt organizations we fund. Such requirements have never been imposed on BHSA in the past and we are working with the Office of the Dean of Students (for Boalt) to better understand the scope of their request and the potential ramifications of what is being asked of us. Furthermore, we are appalled that UC imposed these unprecedented requests after finals (late December) and has been unresponsive to our requests for clarification and additional information over the past several weeks. Until we received these additional requests, we were led to believe that funds would be disbursed to student groups towards the end of last semester.

At this point, we understand that you are frustrated with the delay in funds being disbursed to your respective groups. We are also sensitive to the fact that many of you have, individually, fronted many of the expenses for your organizations last semester and are facing greater financial burdens at this point in the spring semester. Please know that we are doing all that we can to work with Dean H*** to resolve the current situation. Unfortunately, we can only empathize with you at this point, and cannot offer more specific information regarding when the University will release the funds we have already allocated to your respective organizations.

Again, we apologize for the delays and ask for your patience as we work to "fix" a situation that is beyond our immediate control. As always, we are glad to field any additional questions and concerns you have. Because this situation is beyond the authority that BHSA exercises, please copy any correspondence regarding this matter to UC Berkeley School of Law's Dean of Students, A**** H**** at ah*****@law.berkeley.edu.

In Solidarity,

D**** A*****, BHSA Co-President

I would bet my summer pay that the building construction will be delayed for economic reasons. The administration was very foolish to push the project through given the financial crisis and its effects on funding.

Did they seriously think that just because the project was started that it would be completed no matter what? Wow that's naive.

Well, some of my relatives died in the event, so I figured I have license to use it. But granted, it's a sensitive word.

Um, okay. Glad you're appalled, too. But what about the money BHSA already has? E.g, the money they don't get from the UC treasury? E.g., the $700 gouging I took at the bookstore this week?
