New Space Deathmatch: Kato v. Zeb

The third in my series examining winners and losers of the Boalt Hall space reconfiguration. Lest anyone think that I'm just going to trash journals every day, here are two non-basement entities.

Winner: Nancy Kato
Blessed, blessed isolation! Well, the Registrar Office's soon-to-be new location in the MoFo Room isn't that far off the beaten path. But unlike its old space, MoFo isn't stifling. And MoFo's rectangular layout, with an entrance solely at the narrow end, is perfect for channeling/limiting law student interaction. As in a giant hive, Queen Ant M. K-J can be housed deep in the interior, preserved from interruption by an army of drones.

Also, it's location near the building exit ensures that our union-supporting comrades can slip out at exactly 4:30 p.m., regardless of student crisis. One thing's for sure: the MoFo Room has finally reached its zenith for irony potential.

Loser: Cafe Zeb
Hey, is this table taken? Probably not anymore, now that all the cool kids are hanging out on the new basement sofas. Between the 2007 office and courtyard closures, Cafe Zeb was once the only place to relax at Boalt. Not only are there now more places, but those places are about as far away from Zeb as possible. It's easier to walk to Cafe Strada than Zeb now from a club/journal office. (Granted, Strada and Zeb are owned by the same company.)

And let's not forget the other thing: a brand new kitchen in the basement. Refrigerators, a full sink, presumably a microwave--combined with food storage in your journal or club office. Who's really going to go all the way up to Zeb for green tea and a yogurt?

[From a prior related post]:

Patrick joked that the registrar will benefit most from the new student lounge / journal offices because students will be less likely to be in the area.

I laughed, and then I thought more about it. He's on to something.

The student lounge, locker relocation and removal of the courtyard combine to drastically relocate student traffic. As such, the old way of doing things may no longer be the most efficient.

For one: I think the after-hours library entrance/exit should be switched to the other side, closer to the new lockers and the primary entrance/exit students now use.

Any other thoughts?

YES. They should OBVIOUSLY change the entrance. The current side makes really no sense at all. Thank you!

Not true. As it stands, the current library entrance requires you to take a nice tour of the ground level, including all the blocked exits (which are helpful to know in the event of a fire or other catastrophe) and that hall of wonderful pictures!

Is 1:20 Malumphy? Just sounded like how she would say it.

Zeb should be gotten rid of and replaced by a coffee maker and a tray of scones. Zeb sucks for several reasons:
1. The music: good God, soft 90's poprock?! Are you kidding me? And then the xmas music during finals. These people are obviously nuts.

2. The service: gee, 4 people behind the counter and ONE of them is working? Get to work and earn your overpriced fares! These people are obviously lazy.

3. The prices: $0.40 for HOT WATER?!?!?!?! How about $1 for a boiled egg? They should be brought in on anti-trust charges for price fixing. These people are obvious maliciously gouging students.

Get them OUT. I hate that place. Replace it with office space or another student lounge, or a freekin taco cart, but get Zeb out!

Fares are what you pay to ride transit. Wages are what workers earn. If you're going to bash the workers, at least do so in a manner that suggests their services are provided by a human.

I'm not 3:07, but I'm pretty sure by "fares" he/she was referring to the price of the food, not the wages of the staff.

Yeah, John Steele's Legal Professions grades are still out, but he said they'd be late so I'm not too worried.

I would prefer a starbucks, but know the chances of that coming to the school are about zero.

Yah, Steele's should be a while, but can't say we weren't warned.

I've done all the grading, tallying and adjusting and will be submitting the grades online tomorrow morning. I don't know when they'll be available to students. I do appreciate your patience.

If Starbucks ever shows up at Boalt I swear to God I will personally ensure that donations drop by 25%, I swear to God. Worst burnt coffee ever.

Aww, give Zeb a break. It's nice to have a cafe right inside the building, and don't hate on the workers! Sheesh! I eat there like 5 times a week and they are always super-nice and everyone behind the counter is busy. Yeah, it is overpriced, but that's obviously not the fault of the hourly workers.

Also, the music = awesome, thank you.

Zeb haters: have you eaten at the other on-campus eateries? I'll take $6 for a good sandwich over $5 for a lame sandwich any day.
