Who Could Have Predicted This?

An e-mail went out today informing us that the new student center will not open on Tuesday, as planned. Shocking, I know. Although we're assured that the mysterious problems causing the delay should be resolved "very quickly," the school has given no indication when this might be. In the meantime, journals like mine are left without an office at one of our busiest times.

I understand that delays happen and are often difficult to predict, but I don't understand why student groups were forced to move out of the annex before the new student center was complete. Doesn't it make more sense to keep us there until the new place is definitely done, leaving no room for crises like this one?

The e-mail after the jump.

Just thought I'd post this since I didn't see it up yet:

The new center for student activities, located in the west basement of the building, will not be ready to open as planned tomorrow morning. There is a problem with some of the final prep work that is holding things up. As in so many complicated construction projects, everything in the final stage went off as planned except for one thing, and that one thing has put the brakes on everything. As of now the space will not be accessible tomorrow (Tuesday) morning. The law school folks are scrambling to get this problem resolved., but some of it is beyond the law school's control. Since law student journals and associations were all moved into the new space over this week end, we know that this is a serious problem. If things go as they should it should all be resolved very quickly, but I did not want anyone taken by surprise when they try to enter the new space tomorrow. Sorry for the hassles this delay causes.

The space looks great. Now if we can only get it opened up for you.....

And I agree 100% with Dan. The inconvenience of being ousted from the library because of construction noise is annoying, but not without a simple solution: find another place to study.

Quite to the contrary, the fiasco created by telling journals they're free to move into their space on Tuesday and then revoking that invitation is inexcusable. We're all dealing with publication deadlines and we need access to our resources (sources, copiers, printers, paper, computers) to do our work. I personally have an edit going on right now and need to get access to materials. Unfortunately, because of our expected move in date, everything is boxed up and inaccessible. This delay better not be more than a day or two.

Did anyone else read it as though he were emphasizing "morning"? It almost makes it sound like hey, it's not going to be ready for you when you get to school, but swing on by after lunch or so and we'll be good.

Though I assume he would have indicated if there was a shot it would be ready by afternoon...

I'm guessing that if there is a shot of it being open at any time, we won't know. It'd just set us up for another letdown.

Now, I'm going to go back to being happy with the choice of a full-time, away-from-campus externship this semester.

Not to go spinning conspiracy theories, but--ah hell, let's spin a conspiracy theory. Why not leave us in the old office until the new one was finished? I'm guessing because they had to give up the lease. The annex is probably going to be used for something else, so we needed to be out of there in the first week of the semester (just before undergrads start).

Now what if they knew the new center wasn't finished, but had to move us out anyway? If they told us that ahead of time, we blame them for screwing up the lease date. But, if they assure us we can move in in four days, and then blame the construction people for some vague and anonymous delay "out of their control", no one's the wiser!

I'm pretty angry about this, regardless of whether it was intentional. If we're not in by Thursday, I say we make our voices heard in some more formal manner.

Not that this completely disproves your theory Dan, but CLR was moved from our lovely abode in the Mo Fo Lounge on Friday. So, there wouldn't have been any problems with a lease there. But now all our materials are boxed up in some hidden chamber like everyone else's (I assume it's like the Ark at the end of Indiana Jones). In retrospect, I'm somewhat disappointed we didn't plan on delays and refuse to move until the space downstairs was totally ready.

Well, I've talked to some people who tried that strategy, but were repeatedly reassured by student services that the new center would DEFINITELY be done Tuesday. If wishes were horses...
