Here's the Keker
Looks like a new firm is springing to life in SF. (Website here). Of course Mark Lemley is the former Boalt professor who formed 1/3 of the big wig IP trio. And Ragesh Tangri was a visiting professor at Boalt a while back.

Interesting. When I interviewed at KVN, I asked what Mark Lemley did for the firm. An associate told me, "Basically, he comes in once a week, and all the partners go to him with their really intractable problems. And he thinks about them for a while, and then comes up with an answer. And for that he's paid enormous sums of money."
Seemed like a pretty sweet gig at the time. I wonder why he'd leave it for something more risky.
If John Keker now retires, what happens to the firm?
My memory may be off, but didn't KVN actually lose the few cases in which Lemley had a prominent role?
I think the "law firm etiquette" in these circumstances is for the new firm NOT to recruit or hire any associates/paralegals/secretaries from the old firm.
Lemley probably has done a lot more work at the firm than just those few high-profile cases. We have a few eccentric "deep thinkers" at my firm who have that job. One such guy did 50% pro bono last year.
