The Long, Hot Summer

I'd heard a rumor earlier this week that the CDO would be giving a gloom-and-doom summer job presentation to 1L's. I ended up sitting in the back of the room during one of those talks today, but I didn't find it particularly grim. In fact, the most intersting thing about the presentation was the timeline for Fall OCIP 2009, not the tone of the talk or the tenor of the market.

The next fall OCIP will be August 25, 2009, through September 09, 2009. That's right. August 25th. Because it kicks off so early, Boalt will conduct all fall "OCIP programming"* this spring, and work with students over the summer to make sure students are ready to participate.

Although perhaps not much earlier than last year, it still seems to me that August 25th is an incredibly early kickoff to the job marathon -- well, credibly early, I guess, particularly as the job market retracts -- but I understand why it has to be that way. Still, I feel for the class of 2011. B-Line is a terrible place to spend the month of August.

*Frankly, I'm not sure what the speaker meant by "programming." He couldn't have meant bidding, could he? My guess is he meant CV consolations, interview prep, etc.

On the other hand, I think I'd prefer to get it over with earlier. It's kind of a sucky process whenever it occurs. And maybe they can avoid the oppressive heat in Hotel Durant if they do it a bit earlier.

I know some will freak out at the very mention, but AmJurs and Prossers posted to BearFacts yesterday.

OCIP started August 25th this past fall as well and I didn't find it particularly early.

Not quite sure if I understand what the big deal about that is.

Oh, you're probably just more decisive and better organized than me. I recall feeling overwhelmed, confused, and mildly guilty about researching OCI firms before my first job had ended. Then, when I got back to Berkeley, BAM -- interviews. What happened to summer?

In hindsight, I am glad I got a job before the economy melted down in September, but that doesn't mean the end of my summer was fun. So maybe it's not a big deal. I donno. I'm glad it's over, though.

OCIP has been about that early since the current 3Ls went through it in the Fall of 2007. I don't think this is really a change. Maybe 3 or 4 days earlier at the most.

2:36, how do AmJurs and Prossers show up on BearFacts? Is there a special code on Prior Term Grades or something?

A big flashy thing pops up at you. Unfortunately, it only happens once. So if you have a pop-up blocker, you'll never know...

Mine was on the Prior Grades Screen under the grades with a headline titled Memoranda, then a line, then Jurisprudence Award;

The timeline adjustment needed to happen years ago. We were constantly at a disadvantage, as compared to east coast law students, because of the late OCIP. And getting a head start on prepping students isn't a bad idea either. When I was in school, I found that the pre-OCIP programming was of limited use and relied more on more senior students and mentors to prepare for OCIP. Finally, a move in the right direction! Keep it up, CDO!
