Big Changes in Big Law?

I don't check the Shark very often, but was prompted by a commenter in the thread below.

TWO rather interesting tid-bits that work well together for a merged thread here:

First, Orrick announces tomorrow that it officially drops lock-step salaries. Very interesting (albeit confusing) system they're announcing there.

Second, law schools are conspiring with law firms to standardize OCI in the spring.

For as little change as these systems have seen over the years, the widespread implementation of either would be a rather groundbreaking event.

The problem with Orrick's custom track is that none of your other model trains will fit on them. This is likely just a marketing ploy to sell more custom model trains.

I don't want to be a Debbie Downer, but I worry that people might be tracked against their wishes in the Orrick plan. It's a little bit like tracking in elementary school. The people in the top reading group are the only ones with realistic chances as college, law school, etc. I realize this already happens to some extent though.

People do not get put in the custom track unless they want to be there - no one ends up there voluntarily. They made this very clear.

I meant no one ends up there involuntarily.

9:56/9:57 is so naive you'd think he/she were a law student ... Oh wait ...

Eh, OCIP was happening earlier and earlier every year anyway, so it was only a matter of time before it happened so early that it actually occurred in the spring semester.

Toney, I think they mean OCI will be in Spring of 2L, not 1L. If they take into account Fall 2L grades, seems like it could be an advantage for students who don't do well in 1L but get into the swing in 2L Fall...

Also, the Orrick plan sounds like it advantages people who work hard and prove their proficiency. Of course, it'll probably sharpen competition, too. But, overall, should be a boon to Boalties.

Speaking of working hard and proving your proficiency (or just catching a lucky break), Amjurs and Prossers have been posted.

I highly doubt that fall semester grades will be out in time for a spring OCI, knowing berkeley. At the very least, don't take Vetter in the fall if you want that grade before May.

on another note: WTF is with our photographer. The photos in the hall are all (1) minorities or (2) women or (3) minority women. Photos from every student/alumni event are only published if they feature (a) a minority, (b) a woman or (c) some combination of them with a judge/powerful donor.

I swear to God, can the photographer please recognize that there are a few people at this school who do not fit into one of those groups?

Oh, but see the photoseries from last week's alumni reception on judicial careers. Plenty of non-URM faces there.

Further, it is worth noting that Boalt's 60/40 female to male ratio means that the phrases "female" and "person of color" actually DO describe most of the faces at Boalt.

At any rate, I'm sure your complaint has more to do with the publicist than the photographer. Give the fellow a break!

(and as an attendee, I can attest that the photoseries fairly represents of group of people at the receoption -- I don't think the images were cherry-picked at all.)

The photos at the most recent reception aren't quite as bad as normal. There are a pretty good cross-section of faces there, I agree.

However, the wall thing is spot on. EVERY photo in that hallway focuses on someone either female or a minority. It is so blatant that it is pretty disgusting, imo.

The photographer is the nicest guy ever - don't get on his case! You think he actually has any input into what is posted on the walls of the school? Give me a break. -alum

Yeah I actually noticed that the first day they went up. The only photo with a male is Edley talking with some old people and a guy literally laying on the ground in a group photo.

I don't really care, it just comes across as so ridiculous to be almost funny. Boalt really is the law school equivalent of a Skadden recruiter saying they "love the people" at their lifestyle firm.

Being a white male myself, and not a particularly liberal one, I'm not sure I understand the fuss about having a bunch of pictures of minorities, women, and minority women on the wall. What are there, 8 pictures on that wall? Who cares who gets portrayed?

I have no doubt that it's a conscious effort by the school to show a commitment to a particular notion of diversity. Blatant? Sure. Superficial? I think so. But disgusting? Come on, take your summer salary and buy a thicker skin. It takes nothing away from your accomplishments as a Boalt grad. In my opinion, it's strikingly petulant to be so sensitive about a photo series, particularly when we're all very fortunate to go to school where we do.

Very well put 12:49pm.

Gosh, don't we have bigger things to worry about? It's the Fourth of July, folks. Go have a hot dog and some beer. It sounds like you could use it!
