Guess the Crazy Alaskan's Motivation

So, Palin resigning from her governorship has got to be one of the dumbest political moves ever, right? There has got to be something bigger underneath this news that has not been revealed yet.

So, I thought we could play a little game. Whoever manages to correctly guess why Palin really left gets . . . uh . . . the honor of being right. Yeah, I don't really have anything to give you. But you can brag to all your friends.

Anyway, my theory is that she's dropping the governorship to take a job at Fox News (thus all the talk about trying to effect change "outside of government"). Although, I'd assume we'd have heard some stories about negotiations going on. But I'm sticking to my guns.

WTF? I logged in to create this very post. Except I was going to freak out the bar takers by making it multiple choice:

a) Impending bombshell / scandal.
b) Really is that unstable.
c) Still thinks she can beat Tina Fey in national politics.
d) Only the first mortgage is excused.
e) All of the above.

f) to run for President in 2010.

Why 2010? Because it's the Mavericky thing to do.

If she declares her candidacy for President, it will be the funniest thing I think I'll ever witness in American politics. I thought she was unqualified before. But if she thinks she has any political credibility after dropping Alaska like a one-night stand, she must be high.

Other than Fox News anchor (which I will find equally hilarious), I think she might be resigning in a deal to keep more ethical violations under wraps.

Whatever it is, I can't wait to find out.

listen to her contorted logic of why she's resigning. first she announces that she won't run for reelection, and that since lame duck governors (which she MIGHT be if reelected, five years down the line) tend to shirk off, its logical that the "right thing to do" is resign immediately. what a twit

Let's see. She's the mother of a Downs baby & a teenager with a babe of her own; her in-office performance can only apparently continue to harm her; and, by golly, she does what she wants, when she wants with who she wants anytime she wants without any advice from pesky advisors, thank you very much. She was thrust on the national stage unprepared and unteachable and likely has as many skeletons in her closet as does any other politician but no one is going to turn a blind eye to her because she's just SUCH GOOD PRESS. I say these things with compassion despite my distaste for American's taste for perky anti-intellectualism coupled with evangelical fervor. I hope she seeks counseling before parading herself and her hapless family out on the public stage for further misadventures. I truly believe we should give her the same break she should give herself from public scrutiny.

If she promises never to run for public office again, I would be VERY happy to leave her alone. Until then, my mission to save the Republican party from self-immolation continues.

Though the comments about her family were always inappropriate, in my opinion. Why are families of public figures OK to mock? It is cruel in almost any case.

why is berkeley filled with such idiots? she would have been a great vice president and mccain would have been a better president than obama.

You know, you are right. I am now going to immediately go out and begin telling everyone that she is awesome. Thank you for the great factual and logical arguments supporting your views.

Look, I also think McCain would have done a great job. But I don't hear many people saying that Palin would have. If you think that, please explain why.

Also, I went to Berkeley, but I am a Republican who is seriously disturbed by the current state of the GOP. It is not helpful to blindly support the party when then put up someone so amazingly unqualified for the VP position.

Thank you, 3:01.

11:25, it isn't just Berkeley people that recognize Palin was a disaster. There is a reason that McCain workers from the campaign are STILL blasting her in the media.

She may be very nice. She is definitely someone who brings a different style of government. But she was totally unprepared for the national scene, and knew nothing about how to run the country---rather than a state with a lower population than Alameda county.

Of course liberals hate her, but so does a rather large portion of the GOP. She is one very large reason that the race was not even close on election day.

Family members get mocked if they do something to deserve mocking, such as getting involved in ethically suspect deals like Troopergate, or being a hypocrite, such as becoming the spokeswoman of an abstinence only education group after both saying and proving that abstinence education doesn't work.

"do something to deserve mocking"?

Nice.

How about I write a nice article for the Contra Costa times about the last time one of us did something to deserve mocking. Or would you rather me not write about the law student that threw the wine bottle off the roof onto a cops personal vehical while at a law school function? Or about the 2L that had to get an interview rescheduled because she was cracked out? Or...or...

Fact is, there is no good reason to bring family in. There wasn't for Bush, there isn't for Obama, and there isn't for you.

Keep to the politics, and we may elect leaders that could actually lead.

Normally I would agree with McWho, but Palin is a special exception.

She has used baby Trig has a political device (proof of her pro-life stance), her daughter Bristol is a public figure (spokeperson for a teen abstinence group Candie something or other), and has even publically attacked the 18-year-old father of her only grandchild.

She thrust her own fam in the spotlight, so she should reap the backlash when things don't look too kosher.

Just to expand on Matt's remarks.

Sarah Palin wants it both ways, even more than most politicians, which is saying a lot. It's a sign of her naivete, lack of empathy, profound disinterest in anything but herself, and (it is a separate issue) her pathologically aggressive narcissism.

She unfurls her brood, nonsequitir snowbilly names and all (Bristol? Trig? Track?), as political props but then recoils when reporters take her at her word and treat them as the public figures she herself has made them.

She herself is a creation of the media, of course (with a cynical assist from John McCain). If not for the supernova coverage she received in August 2008, who would have the slightest idea who the governor of Alaska is, much less what she wears or who knocked up her daughter?

Nobody really knew who she was, and she was unprepared for reporters doing their due diligence in the absence of John McCain doing any himself. When those reporters learned more, and shared it with the rest of us (as is their duty), and everyone did a double take, and McCain's ploy imploded, she arguably had little choice but to blame the group easiest to blame -- and the group most easily vilified, particularly in the socially conservative circles which Palin enthralls: the media!

It's pity to do the resigning. Palin had got the right and promising job I guess.
