What Really Matters
As the comments on the Bar thread are starting to reflect, the best part about being done is going back to summer TV. In my experience there are two types of summer TV viewers: those who watch the reality crap that the networks put on (e.g. shows where The Hoff is a judge!!!) and those who latch on to the high quality cable shows that begin their season when the network season ends (Rescue Me, Entourage, Dexter, etc.). Regardless of which camp you fall under, summer programming is definitely not as boring as it once was. But it does require a lot of scouting time. So, to ease the bar takers into their TV viewing habits, let this be an open thread to share thoughts on shows that people have scoped out for the summer.
Relatedly, I'm happy to see that HBO leads the networks by a wide margin in showing gay characters. Personally, I think the article makes a glaring oversight by not mentioning Omar from The Wire, who strikes me as one of the best protagonists in TV in general, let alone among the few gay characters.

I absolutely agree re: Omar from the Wire. He was my favorite character on that show.
As for the rest of television, I'm still catching up on all the great TV I have missed (Entourage is next) while mourning the passing of former favorites (Firefly, *sob*).
Stoked for Mad Men.
True Blood is awesome.
Oh boy, my favorite topic! I used to be a HUGE fan of summer tv, but this summer has been pretty subpar. Armen, you are correct that cable used to really step up its game in the summer, but that's because it couldn't compete in the "real" season. That's no longer the case, and summer tv has suffered as a result.
FX debuted all its best programming in the summer: The Shield, Nip/Tuck (it was good for a while), Rescue Me, Damages. But as the network has become more recognized, it basically only airs Always Sunny and Rescue Me in the summer now, with both pushing into the regular season at either end.
HBO also used to only put on stuff in the summer, but now has a pretty healthy year-round schedule. I would argue its summer shows (True Blood and Entourage) are the worst original programs currently in its lineup. The good stuff (Big Love, In Treatment) still comes on during the school year.
AMC is following the same trend, debuting the AMAZING Mad Men and Breaking Bad combo in the summer, but now steadily pushing Man Men's season bad and airing Breaking Bad mostly during the winter/spring.
Anyway, you make a good point that summer tv requires scouting, something which I've had little time for with my job. So maybe I'm just not up to speed on some good stuff airing somewhere. But as far as I can tell, the only original dramas worth watching this summer are Rescue Me and Mad Men, and Mad Men hasn't even started yet.
Sorry, "bad=back."
I also wanted to clarify that Dexter no longer airs in the summer, again indicating this annoying trend. Other showtime shows like Californication and Weeds have also moved to the regular season.
Firefly was a great season. The movie was good too.
I think Showtime is airing new episodes of Weeds. More importantly, Nurse Jackie, Nurse Jackie, Nurse Jackie.
oh yeah -- good luck today, bar-takers.
Allow me to hijack this thread for a moment. Instead of focusing on new Summer TV (which I still say is pretty scarce in 09, but good call with Nurse Jackie, 6:14), why don't we all list five or six must-see series on DVD. I mean they will probably be pretty obvious, but if we're all listing the very cream of the crop, maybe someone will catch a gem they haven't seen. (But let's leave of the TRULY obvious stuff like The Wire and Sopranos)
Firefly is a great place to start for Sci Fi fans. Here are my must-sees:
1. Freaks and Geeks
2. Early seasons of The West Wing (and also maybe the last season, for the Obama parallels)
3. Sports Night
4. Veronica Mars Season 1 (trust me, it's a lot better than you probably think.)
5. Breaking Bad (in my opinion, the best show currently on television, even over Mad Men)
Oh, and Battlestar Galactica.
What? No love for Wipeout and that show that's called something like I Got Hijacked and Put On a Japanese Gameshow? Quality, quality programming, and, really, both are monuments to the human spirit.
Totally off topic, but in case anyone has better insight into this than me, whaaaat is the deal with the financial aid's office summer earnings equation? How come they don't do it post-taxes? $7k to live all summer? Maybe if you're living in Berkeley with $800/mo in rent.

Bit old school, but the first 5 or 6 seasons of Married With Children. Two words: "Lower Uncton."
Also the first 4 seasons of Lost on Blue Ray (with Season 5 due to come out some time later this year before the final season begins in January).
6:37, this sounds like DE's long-stated plans of revamping Boalt's finaid system to reward those pursuing public interest / public sector careers. In the world of college finaid, AGI is almost always the starting point for any determination, followed by various deductions, credits, etc. At least that's how I remember it.
