Sad News
My co-bloggers through the years and myself are former students of Professor Frickey. I understand the current Boalt community received news of his passing from Dean Edley, but I think many alumni may not have yet heard, hence, this post.

What a huge loss for the Boalt community. I have honestly never met anyone who loved teaching, and his students, as much as Professor Frickey. Without question, he has left a mark on all of those fortunate enough to call him their professor.
Man, I loved Professor Frickey. He knew a lot about his subject and was also a really swell guy.
Do you happen to have a copy of what Edley sent out? So sad....
No, I just heard from Boalt profs. If anyone is kind enough to post a copy, that'd be great.
This is truly a sad day. Professor Frickey was amazing -- as a professor, as an academic, and as a human being. He is one of the kindest men I've ever met. I wish his family support during this time.
I know a member of the class of 2011 had coordinated with the Alumni Development Office to begin a fund in his name that would help support students pursuing careers in Indian Law. Perhaps a fitting opportunity to contribute to his legacy.
what the Dean sent out:
"Our Friend and Colleague Phil Frickey
Colleagues,
Our beloved Phil Frickey, the Alexander F. and Mary T. Morrison Professor of Law, died this morning. Mary Ann wrote to say that there will be a memorial service in his Kansas hometown, and we will also do something here at Boalt when the community reassembles in August. I'll share an obituary with you as soon as we have it ready. Mary Ann asks that in lieu of flowers donations be directed to the scholarship fund we've established, the details of which will be included in the obituary.
As I said at a recent party to celebrate his years of service at Berkeley, Phil's legacy at Boalt puts him in our pantheon after only a single decade. Harder to measure are the extraordinary gifts he gave us in contributions of the mind and heart. Holes that will never be filled. "
And for those of you who are nearby:
"We've set up a small display at the Reference Desk in honor of Phil Frickey. The display includes a guest/condolence book, so if you'd like to stop by and sign your name, offer your best wishes to Phil's family, or share a recollection, please feel free to do so."
Such a great professor. He made a 8 o'clock class about statutory interpretation bearable.
Truly wrenching news. Frickey was a Boalt gem.
Prof. Frickey was one of the best human beings I have ever met. What an honor and a privilege to have known him. Sad news indeed.
Law school obit:
Folks, we just posted our obituary of Professor Frickey on the law school website, for those interested. It includes the nice video tribute shot for him last year.

that video is quite a tribute to a life well lived.
