Bar Results Open Thread
The July 2010 bar results have been released. It seems like Boalt's passage rate was pretty high, so kudos to many of you. I think all of us also know people who got bad news on Friday, though, which makes this period very bittersweet and emotionally confusing. I hope everyone remembers that tests like these are imperfect measures of almost nothing. Let's just be there for each other. Feel free to discuss your thoughts and feelings below.

any official word on the pass rate or just anecdotal?
all i could find was the pass rates through the Feb exam.

Formal statistics are not released for a few more months.
This post is a little California-centric. That's understandable, but some Boaltie '10ers found out weeks ago. We passed and failed the Bars too. Just sayin'.
10:24 - nearly every post on here is California-centric. The BART officer shooting, tuition increases, California politics, etc.
I suspect part of the reason for this is that Boalt is, you know, in California. But it could be for other reasons instead.
toney,
but it is boalt-connected. A lot of Boalt Alums take non-California bars
Yeah. Can I get an open thread on the MN Bar?
N&B is getting way too MN-centric.
If you want to be involved in Nuts and Boalts bar threads, take the bar in California. I say, worth it.
1:23, comment of the year. And well played.
Did anyone else get a little bit of a legal at Dan's comment?
Who would take the MN bar? Like DC, you can wave into MN bar based on your MBE score alone assuming you do it promptly after getting admitted somewhere else. No reciprocity required even (i.e. its okay if you are a CA attorney and CA makes all other attorneys take the full bar or the bar minus the MBE, you still can waive into MN by your MBE score alone).
Why take the MN bar? That's easy:
1. I grew up in MN and plan to return there eventually.
2. I currently live and work in DC, and can waive in.
3. I wasn't sure whether I wanted to take a job requiring bar membership - in fact, I was leaning away from it but decided to take a bar exam to keep doors open - so a three-day exam wasn't all that appealing. A two-day exam with a 90-plus percentage pass rate was.
4. I didn't have to study that much, at all; in fact, my bar study consisted mainly of drinking beer and watching the World Cup.
5. So you can participate in the majority of the N&B threads.
6. Secret discounts at Target and Best Buy.
7. MN Performance test consists of the following task: "Assume you are an important witness to a serious crime. Please provide a physical description of Steve Buscemi."
8. Airport restroom rendezvous with former Idaho senators.
9. Recent MN ethics AND substance abuse credit CLE program consisted of the sole multiple choice question:
"Who the fuck are the Knutsons?
a) They own a farm outside of Moorehead, Minnesota.
b) They want their daughter, Bunny, back.
c) They have hired a Brother Seamus.
d) All of the above."
Armen,
It's Moorhead, not Moorehead. But however it is spelled, it is fucking cold and worse than that lousy cow-town Fargo by all counts except for crime.
MN to 120!
7:27, you're wrecking my MN bona fides, which I desperately need for the holidays.
This latest boalt2011 thread is officially a fail.
10:14,
you posted your comment too early. i sort of think it got hilarious around 10:30.
No, it just got more annoying.
This thread is way too Minnesota-centric.
I think Minnesota is way to N&B-centric.
okay, big breath, you all know that Fargo is in North Dakota, right?
Okay, cool.
No, no, I know, the movie implicates Minnesota in its plot, I know. And really, they are very close to one another. But, okay. North Dakota.
11:19, the Coen brothers have made more than one movie. I'm not sure exactly how many, but I wager it's less than 1 billion.
Most notable fictional character from Minnesota? I say it's a toss-up between Mary Tyler Moore and Rose from Golden Girls.
False. It's Guy Noir.
i think it's macgyver. he edges out paul bunyan, betty crocker, and minnesota fats, doncha know.
Bunyan is lame. Get a regular-colored Ox, loser.
What about Coach from Coach?
Bob Dylan.
Bob Dylan is real...
robert zimmerman is real. bob dylan is an act.
10. So you can take a legal.
"Imperfect measures of almost nothing." So, it's a perfect measure of a lot?
or it's an imperfect measure of a quality that amounts to almost nothing
12:23 logic fail.
Can some one please advise on the dress code for the swearing in ceremony. Particularly for women. Is this like appearing in court?
Suit.
Armen, Could you elaborate a bit? Do you think we should wear a suit, or is a suit what most people actually wear?
As a caveat I have not attended the Boalt swearing in ceremony. I was sworn in by the Judge I externed for during my 1L summer, in chambers. (If you have a chance to do so, I strongly recommend this path as a way of keeping in touch with judges you worked for). So someone who has attended can comment on what most people wear.
But I think you should wear a suit. It is one of the most formal occasions. You are presenting yourself to the respective courts, and in turn the courts are introducing themselves to you. Maybe the fact that it takes place in Booth adds a degree of informality, but imagine if instead you had to sit in a court room to be sworn in. The answer becomes clear.
Plus it's easier to hide a flask in a suit (for men).
I attended the Boalt ceremony. Ditto Armen's suggestion for the suit.
If I can't make it to the Boalt ceremony and also can't make it to any of the Cal Bar's ceremonies, what should I do? Can I just show up at a court and ask them to swear me in?
Any notary public can swear you in.
But you should try just walking into a random courtroom and asking a judge swear you in. Report back on how that goes.
wear what you'd wear to court, which in most cases would be a suit. there will be judges swearing you in, and lots of photos being taken and all that. it's a really fun event. bring your family and friends and all that.
Re what to wear to swearing-in, here are photos from two years ago:

What is the bar?
And while we're at it, what is a model penal code?
The bar is an ancient ceremonial torture ritual passed on through generations of masochists.
The model penal code is toilet paper.
congrats to another boaltie bristow fellow!
That is really great news re. the newly minted Bristow Fellow! Two in a row, go Boalt!
She deserves it, too. It's always good to see nice people succeed.
Regarding attire for the swearing-in ceremony: a suit is fine but by no means necessary. If you're coming from work, what you'd wear to work is fine as long as you're not in jeans for casual Friday (is it on a Friday again)? A sweater and nice pants are perfectly appropriate and will not look out of place.
Does anyone know if you have to retake the MBE if you want to take the NY bar and you've passed the CA bar?
Thou shalt not speak on here or elsewhere on the interwebs about the unspeakable.
12:04--
before no, now yes
http://www.nybarexam.org/TheBar/TheBar.htm#JURIS
"Please note that effective August 1, 2010, the Board no longer accepts the transfer of MBE scores earned from a prior administration of the MBE in another jurisdiction. "
Sorry to hijack the thread, but will someone start a professor quotes thread?
RE: The unspeakable, can we place some more emphasis on the fact that it's UNSPEAKABLE? i.e. posts on law school message boards.
Huh?
Just wear a suit, people. Jeez.
Passage rate was 92 percent, second behind Stanford.
11:51 - you have a link to back up them assertions?
11:51 IS the link.
Such a great article which remembers that tests like these are imperfect measures of almost nothing. In which think all of us also know people who got bad news on Friday, though, which makes this period very bittersweet and emotionally confusing. Thanks for sharing this article.
