Bar Results Open Thread

The July 2010 bar results have been released. It seems like Boalt's passage rate was pretty high, so kudos to many of you. I think all of us also know people who got bad news on Friday, though, which makes this period very bittersweet and emotionally confusing. I hope everyone remembers that tests like these are imperfect measures of almost nothing. Let's just be there for each other. Feel free to discuss your thoughts and feelings below.

This post is a little California-centric. That's understandable, but some Boaltie '10ers found out weeks ago. We passed and failed the Bars too. Just sayin'.

10:24 - nearly every post on here is California-centric. The BART officer shooting, tuition increases, California politics, etc.

I suspect part of the reason for this is that Boalt is, you know, in California. But it could be for other reasons instead.

but it is boalt-connected. A lot of Boalt Alums take non-California bars

Who would take the MN bar? Like DC, you can wave into MN bar based on your MBE score alone assuming you do it promptly after getting admitted somewhere else. No reciprocity required even (i.e. its okay if you are a CA attorney and CA makes all other attorneys take the full bar or the bar minus the MBE, you still can waive into MN by your MBE score alone).

11/23/2010 3:46 PM
Blogger Matt Berg said...

Why take the MN bar? That's easy:

1. I grew up in MN and plan to return there eventually.
2. I currently live and work in DC, and can waive in.
3. I wasn't sure whether I wanted to take a job requiring bar membership - in fact, I was leaning away from it but decided to take a bar exam to keep doors open - so a three-day exam wasn't all that appealing. A two-day exam with a 90-plus percentage pass rate was.
4. I didn't have to study that much, at all; in fact, my bar study consisted mainly of drinking beer and watching the World Cup.

c) They have hired a Brother Seamus.
d) All of the above."

Armen,
It's Moorhead, not Moorehead. But however it is spelled, it is fucking cold and worse than that lousy cow-town Fargo by all counts except for crime.

Can some one please advise on the dress code for the swearing in ceremony. Particularly for women. Is this like appearing in court?

Suit.

11/29/2010 3:23 PM

Armen, Could you elaborate a bit? Do you think we should wear a suit, or is a suit what most people actually wear?

11/29/2010 5:04 PM
Blogger Armen Adzhemyan said...

As a caveat I have not attended the Boalt swearing in ceremony. I was sworn in by the Judge I externed for during my 1L summer, in chambers. (If you have a chance to do so, I strongly recommend this path as a way of keeping in touch with judges you worked for). So someone who has attended can comment on what most people wear.

But I think you should wear a suit. It is one of the most formal occasions. You are presenting yourself to the respective courts, and in turn the courts are introducing themselves to you. Maybe the fact that it takes place in Booth adds a degree of informality, but imagine if instead you had to sit in a court room to be sworn in. The answer becomes clear.

Plus it's easier to hide a flask in a suit (for men).

I attended the Boalt ceremony. Ditto Armen's suggestion for the suit.

If I can't make it to the Boalt ceremony and also can't make it to any of the Cal Bar's ceremonies, what should I do? Can I just show up at a court and ask them to swear me in?

Blogger Armen Adzhemyan said...

Any notary public can swear you in.

11/29/2010 6:47 PM

But you should try just walking into a random courtroom and asking a judge swear you in. Report back on how that goes.

wear what you'd wear to court, which in most cases would be a suit. there will be judges swearing you in, and lots of photos being taken and all that. it's a really fun event. bring your family and friends and all that.

Regarding attire for the swearing-in ceremony: a suit is fine but by no means necessary. If you're coming from work, what you'd wear to work is fine as long as you're not in jeans for casual Friday (is it on a Friday again)? A sweater and nice pants are perfectly appropriate and will not look out of place.
