Is the Rumor True?

I heard a rumbling that starting this year WOA will be a graded course. Is that true?

If so, I feel that is great news. For better or worse, and despite our occasional posturing to the contrary, grades do motivate Boalties. Because I feel that WOA and LRW are the most foundationally useful classes in the 1L lineup (civ pro is a close runner up) any added anxiety will be worth it. Better to fret over how to synthesize cases and express an argument than over the application of economic theory to contributory negligence.

That would be true if the grading was anonymous and if all of the teachers were as good as actual professors.

It's true - if my sources are correct, they announced it at the mid-semester 1L orientation.

If I am an employer, I'm not going to hire anyone who got a P in WOA, especially if it is litigation. Sucks to be a 1L.

It's TRUE! Which means my peers' facebook status updates are going to be even more obnoxious because their homework will be graded.

For the record, my WOA prof was fantastic. There may be a bit of variation, but they all are truly focused on helping their students be successful.

I'm sorry! I was looking to see how I could change it. I don't even know how it chose 'Dan' instead of 'Daniel' or 'Scooter' or anything else.

Grateful to be a member of the class of 2012 -- (slightly) better job prospects than last year & no grades for WOA/LRW. That really does suck for y'all, 1Ls!

My WOA professor was utterly useless and terrible. It was essentially a free-for-all in terms of prior legal writing experience, because she added nothing.

T. is one of the best professors I've had. Way better than any lecture in law school.

My WOA professor was also pretty much a huge joke, but I do recognize the majority of them kick ass. Nonetheless, mine = huge joke.

I couldn't disagree more. Yuck. While WOA and LRW may have some utility for some of us, for others (like myself), they were both rather pointless.

On top of that, as good as the TA's were, a couple of my draft arguments were definitely half-ass edited. Further, not all of us were created equal when it comes to oral arguments. Add to this the fact that your opponent could be particularly sharp, or not, and the volunteer judges could be in a good mood, or not, and there are too many variables for this sort of grading to be very accurate at all. I realize this is how it is in real life, but in real life, you either do good enough, or you don't, which exactly resembles the current pass/fail grading structure.
