TGIF?

As many of you may be most painfully aware, this coming Friday is bar results day for us wonderful Californians. Please feel free to post your thoughts/anxiety-driven rants in the waning days of being a non-lawyer. Good thoughts to all . . . even you dirty liberals.

To anyone who doesn't want to hear me say "I'm sure you passed," don't tell me "I'm really stressed out about the bar results"

I guess the unusually high number of posts since then pushed it from my mind. I, for one, believe that heavy drinking on the day of results is an excellent way to ameliorate the anxiety. I recommend it to all. Last year, I ended up singing Part of Your World in Taylor's Refresher (now Grott's, or something) at 7:00 pm. I was asked to leave.

When my bar results came out (from MN), I forgot my number at home. So I had to try and remember what it was. I just picked one that was on the list. Made me feel good all day.

Thirty-three hours. Not that I'm nervous or anything.

See, my plan is to start drinking a couple hours before the results come out. Cause everyone says that they will get drunk either way, but really, if you get bad news, you're not going to want to drink. Drinking is fun (at least until it becomes a problem), and miserable people don't like to have fun. I figure, if you get some momentum going BEFORE you look at the results, then you'll keep it going either way. Am I an alcoholic?

I think to myself "there was that one saturday night when i played video games instead of studying, if i fail i bet it was because of that."

Also, another horrible thing I do, which makes me a really bad person: I look at Boalt's pass rate (~90%), and then I try to think of at least 20 people in our class dumber than myself. This makes me hate me.

I can get to 20, but only if I count Toney.

Toney, you know I didn't take the bar in CA, right? You need to find one more.

No one else does this? I'm the only asshole that went to school here? Come on, be honest. It's bad when even the anonymous crowds are silent.

Anyway, I feel there are a whole lot of legals that I will got.

Haha I don't do it that concretely by person, but I have found myself thinking similar thoughts in vaguer terms.

I remember when I ran for office against 15 people in high school, and every way I counted it, I figured I was the 8th most popular. How is that for vain? Turns out I got elected to one of 5 positions, though, so maybe we tend to underestimate ourselves?

I have a question, and it’s something I have always wondered about. It seems rude to plunk it into this thread, but I don’t know where else to ask. Do associates at places like, say, Lieff Cabraser make the same pay as associates at comparable defense firms? What about bonuses? NALP doesn’t have entries for these types of large plaintiff firms, or if they do they are even less helpful than the entries for the defense firms.

11/18/2010 2:29 PM
Blogger Dan said...

I am mostly just guessing, but I think pay at Lief Cabrasser would be similar, since they are pretty much the largest and best plaintiffs' firm in the area--maybe like $140K vs $160K, but comparable. Pay at a smaller plaintiffs' firm would be significantly lower, at least until you made a name for yourself or made partner.

I am pretty sure the CDO tracks this data, at least for recent grads. May want to check there.

Relatedly, anyone start drinking yet?

i've never been this nervous in my entire life.

on a related note, do you guys think '10 will beat '09's 93% rate or sink lower than 08's 82% rate?

11/19/2010 9:45 AM
Blogger Dan said...

I think 2010's rate will be 99.5%--aka everyone except Toney.

(I only make this joke because I am quite confident Toney will pass; I will now feel very bad if he doesn't.)

Can someone post the website address?

Does anyone know if the overall pass rate is posted today as well? Misery loves company, and if it goes badly I'd at least like to know how many other people are in my boat...

Overall pass rate will not be posted immediately.

I think many people don't do the "x people dumber than me" approach because they realize it's not really about intelligence. Maybe "x people lazier than me" is a bit closer. But there are always flukes too. "x people less lucky than me"?

Most of us will pass, a few of us will fail, and most (93%?) of what determines that will be luck.

God I fucking hope I don't get unlucky.

For us non-Bar takers who are still interested in the results (For purposes of congratulating or wallowing with our friend Bar-takers), does someone typically make the list public as soon as results are released? I know the site says they wont have them up for the public until Sunday...

I have a manners question.

Let's say you passed. Let's say you also just checked the list online to see if a friend's name is on it. Your friend's name is not on the list.

What do you do the next time you're talking to the friend? Do you wait for him to bring up this painful subject? Do you pretend you didn't check the list?

11/21/2010 6:06 PM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

It's a dicey issue, but I think you wait for him to bring it up. Otherwise, it looks like you deliberately looked for his name, which suggests you thought he might not pass. You also shouldn't wait forever, though. I think it would be strange to have not passed and then all of a sudden NO ONE talks to you because they don't know how until you bring it up, which means you have to rehash it like a thousand times.

Another option is to think of some other way you could have heard the info besides checking the list (i.e. a mutual friend told you). Under that circumstance, you could express sympathy without implying doubt.

11/21/2010 6:42 PM
Blogger Patrick Bageant said...

I agree with 6:42. My guess is that if you have to ask, the thing to do is hold back. The analogy that springs to mind is relationships: it's not very nice to ask someone about their recent traumatic breakup, but if the person brings it up, the kind thing to do is empathize, lend an ear, and be supportive. And, like a relationship issue, it WILL come up eventually. I guess I would just hold off until that happens on its own.

Alternatively, if you are close to this person, you could rip the band-aid off by showing up unannounced with beer (if it is a he) or chocolate (if it is a she), or with whatever other recreational substance suits your friendship.

I think it's safe to assume that most women who are being consoled by a friend because they didn't pass the bar would prefer beer (or hard alcohol) over chocolate.
