A Logical Appeal from the Shattuck Down Low Owner
Below is a letter from the owner of the Shattuck Down Low, responding to recent efforts to boycott the venue. It seems to me that the boycott has harmed a local business, local employees, local performers, and Boalt social justice organizations that frequently hosted fundraising events at SDL. Not surprisingly, it seems the boycott has in no way harmed Lakireddy.
I support raising awareness of human trafficking in our community and I support strong punishment for traffickers through our criminal justice system. I don't support a boycott that is aimed at punishing someone who served his time, and doesn't even accomplish that purpose anyway.
As the leader of a social justice organization at Boalt, I can attest to the fact that it is very difficult to find other local venues who are willing to host fundraising events, in a time when our organizations are desperately seeking ways to fundraise. So we should really ask ourselves, who are we harming if we continue to boycott Shattuck Down Low?
I certainly would like to know what my classmates think after reading this letter.
We are writing in response to concerns regarding the Shattuck Down Low, “SDL,” and its relationship to Bali Reddy Lakireddy, a Berkeley land owner convicted of human trafficking who served eight years in prison.
Shattuck Down Low is a family owned business gainfully employing 20 East Bay residents, and dozens more musicians, performers, sound engineers, and promoters. Earnings from shows and sales at SDL do not directly profit Bali Lakireddy or his family. The only relationship SDL has to Lakireddy is that we, like many residents and businesses in and around Berkeley, are a tenant of a Lakireddy property. Second only to UC Berkeley, the Lakireddy family is the largest land/real estate owner in the City of Berkeley, with thousands of commercial and residential units. The Lakireddys receive millions of dollars in rent every month. UPS, CVS, Cross Roads clothing, numerous doctors, therapists, companies, and ironically, Amnesty International, all rent from Lakireddy, or a subsidiary.
Even though it would likely be an insignificant loss to the Lakireddy family income, as a socially conscious business, SDL has considered moving to another property. In addition to the expense, it has not been possible to open at a new location because the City of Berkeley has a moratorium on opening new bars or clubs in the city.
SDL is one of only a few places in Berkeley for locals to play music, see a show, or dance. We are proud to provide a space for musicians, DJs, and artists. We are also proud of fundraising thousands of dollars for numerous non-profit organizations and causes over the years, including Doctors without Borders, Girlfest, J-Flag, public K-12 education, and an organization fighting hunger in Brazil.
Boycotting small businesses in Berkeley will not affect the Lakireddy family, but it will adversely affect the employees of such businesses, and their families.
Until there is law or policy that allows for the seizure of property and other assets from individuals who profited from human trafficking, Bali Lakireddy and family will likely continue to profit and thrive from ownership of numerous Berkeley properties.
On behalf of myself and my staff, and in light of the facts above, I ask for your continued support and patronage of the Shattuck Down Low. We consider our business an asset and contributor to the community, and hope to continue to provide entertainment in Berkeley. I would be happy to talk to anyone interested in the matter, attend any event on the topic, and I welcome any comments and responses. Feel free to forward my contact information.
Sincerely,
Daniel Cukierman

This does change my opinion.
I still think the place sucks. But not more than any other downtown Berkeley bar.
But by going to the SDL, aren't we really harming Kip's, that most American of bars? SDL may have logic on their side, so I appeal instead to your sense of patriotism.
this doesn't change my opinion but it does reinforce what i already suspected: that the boycott is ill-considered.
look, i get that it'd be preferable that none of our money or patronage goes to support this guy, directly or indirectly. and when we have a chance to boycott him in a way that's meaningful and won't hurt local businesses while leaving him unaffected, i'm totally in. but boycotting the downlow doesn't accomplish this - and by continuing it, without boycotting similar organizations like the ones listed in the letter (cvs? amnesty international??), it's inconsistent and ineffectual.
not to mention, salsa night at the downlow is one for the books.
Great response to a stupid boycott.
Y'all boycotters just got pwnd!
So, any response to those who were upset with the questioning of the boycott?
Bar Review should just move to Kips every Thursday and that should be the end of this debate, here are the other bars and why they suck:
Raleighs: No hard-A, drinks are expensive.
SDL: Horrible music, although the letter proves that the boycott is stupid, less people can come.
Triple Rock: Too small, no Hard-A
Thalassa: Literally harder to get a beer than wait in a Russian breadline, noisy and hot as hell.
Jupiter: Shitty service, no Hard A, have to go outside.
All other bars: Someone has to get a DUI or its not happening.
It's time to just permanently fix bar review at Kip's. Slutty undergrads, cheap drinks, good music, pitchers, dancing, a charming seediness, hard-A, good service, and convenient location.
I, for one, would like the Bar Reviewers to be accountable to the people.
We will be gathering at Kip's every Thursday at 9pm until this autocracy accepts our demands. The system is broken! WE DEMAND A DEMOCRATIC BAR REVIEW!
VIVA LA KIPS!
Oh, Huzzah!
Will no one stand up for variety?
KIPS!
The Kips revolution is an unstoppable force, we will be liberated. See you all Thursday.
we get it. you like kip's. but can we agree that you might be willing to mix it up once in a blue moon for a fundraising event? assuming our student body isn't boycotting the venue?
WE ARE WILLING TO TALK ONCE OUR KIPS DEMANDS ARE MET!
The Kips meme wasn't very funny to begin with, and is just annoying now. Give it a rest. For serious though, where are all the people who were so 'rah rah boycott' last week? This seems like an exceptionally reasonable letter from a valuable member of the Berkeley community. If you simply don't want to go to SDL because you don't like the vibe, or you somehow think it is morally offensive, so be it. But I really don't understand how anyone can oppose patronizing SDL based on economic or practical justice grounds. Anyone? Bueller?
Wait, but if we aren't going to boycott the SDL, what WILL we boycott??? I want to boycott something!!!
Man, I LOVED Raleigh's. It's more or less the only thing I really miss about Berkeley. Sitting out on the back patio, especially with nice weather was awesome. The beer selection was great (I actually completed their "Drink around the world" challenge twice my 1L year). And I have the best memory of meeting up with JC & VD after they had drank 4 pitchers between the two of them.
I think this Kips meme is nothing more than a group of my friends to pwn me for swearing a solemn oath never to return there. All I have is my word, you curs! I know who you are...
Toney may have had fun drinking around the world with Jean Claude Van Damme at Raleighs in years gone by, but the game has changed: no more around the world, and beers now coat $4-$5 there.
Bummer. I also remember they had a reverse happy hour where all beers were cheaper after 5:00. Is that still going on?
btw, JCVD reminds me of this: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1130988/
Actually 5:29, the Kips peeps are not your friends trying to pwn you. Rest assured, we are all extremely happy that you are being pwned for your silly vow. But sadly, we can't take credit for the pwnage.
5:53 is right. None of the meme-starters or perpetuaters would dare to disavow Kips.
THIS IS THE MEME!
None of our friends would ever disavor Kip's. You're likely one of our enemies.
AS FOR THE REST OF YOU:
VIVA LA KIPS!
The letter is heartfelt and obviously does an excellent job of summarizing the benefits of not boycotting. But I don't think you can tell people they are wrong for valuing the indirect economic impact that withholding their business from this dude's tenants can have on him. Sure, sure, I get the rebuttal...there are so many properties he owns, how can anyone possibly feel they will make a difference by avoiding the DL? Well, that argument generally applies to any boycott at its inception, but it's still well within people's discretion as consumers to decide how they want to allocate their money. You don't always need to be able to measure the impact of your actions to justify them. Ultimately, the letter is a good thing because it puts more info on the table, but don't try to hold it up as some sort of proof that a boycott is not prudent.
Kips is NOT a meme. It is a LIFESTYLE.
Can someone tell me who organizes bar review? How do those people get chosen?
1:53 for PRESIDENT!

11:23,
By your logic, you should also be boycotting Amnesty International, CVS, etc. Where's the call for those boycotts?
I hereby call for a boycott of CVS. Not just one: all of them, anywhere. Also Rite Aid.
Boycott Amnesty International! Stop supporting sex trafficking!
Also, boycott interacting with all students in Berkeley who rent their apartments from the same dude.
Also, boycott all Boalt students who choose to associate with other Boalt students who rent apartments from the dude.
Also, boycott anyone who has ever met a Boalt student who chooses to associate with other Boalt students who rent apartments from the dude.

Tomorrow our cruel overlords will once again present us with a substandard bar to go to. This bar will inevitably not have hard alcohol, be located in Oakland, or cost a ton to wait in a long line for some bougie beer.
It is essential we stand strong with our demands for a democratic process, while sharing PBR, the drink of the proletariat at KIPS! THE PEOPLE WANT KIPS, AND THE PEOPLE WILL NOT BE SILENCED!

"Tomorrow our cruel overlords will once again present us with a substandard bar to go to. This bar will inevitably not have hard alcohol, be located in Oakland, or cost a ton to wait in a long line for some bougie beer."
Actually, Bar Review is at The Missouri Lounge. They serve hard alcohol, are located in Berkeley, and have drink specials such as “the Special”(whiskey + PBR) or “El Especial” (Tecate + tequila).
YOUR MOVE KIPS SQUAD
The Missouri Lounge is effectively in Oakland. Yet it is awesome. Well played, Bar Review Selection Committee (i.e., Bob B*rring).
It's raining. Poor choice. The best part about MoLo is the outside area.
KIPS SQUAD HERE
We acknowledge that the authoritarian Bar Review regime has made a bold move. They've tried to buy off the "hip"sters by picking a genuinely ok bar in a location that pretty much everyone will drive intoxicated away from.
Much like those in Tahrir Square, when the authoritarians do something like re-arrange the cabinet, you don't just pack up and go home.
YOU GO TO FUCKING KIPS!
KIPS: YOUR ONLY AFTER THE 2L PARTY AFTER PARTY LOCATION
Missouri Lounge is my favorite bar in Berkeley. Its proximity from campus definitely goes in the plus column.
ANOTHER KIPS REP CHIMING IN
A bold choice indeed by our overlords, but once again, like Mubarak handing the keys to deputy, we are not fooled by this shallow attempt. The overlords have given us two unacceptable options: drive drunk or drink responsibly. Neither of these choices are tolerable. KIIIIIIPPPPPSSSSS
re: 12:14, molo has metal-framed tents they set up over the patio when it rains, with heat lamps. and if you get there early enough, you can get one of the tents in the back with seating for like 14 people and privacy. and they still grill wicked food, and have foosball, a pool table, and a dance floor that i admit is tiny. but they also have liquor, good drink specials, and a dj or a live band every night, and multiple tvs with big games or interesting movies playing on them. seroiusly what is better about kips, the jailbait? the worst djs ever? is the only good thing about kips that its close to campus? is everyone too stupid to ride a bike the 8 minutes it would take to get rom campus to molo for real
Here is the truth: Nothing fun ever happens at kips BECAUSE of kips. It just happens there IN SPITE OF kips. I was there a week ago, I came with some of the most hardcore 2L kips advocates. I confess that I had a pretty good time. But while I was there I kept wondering "how much fun could we be having at any better bar in this entire city? or Oakland? or SF?" Like... take the exact same group of people, and move to a bar that doesnt blow, and from the beginning it would have been so much bettter.
The only good thing about kips is the location. Sadly that means it's full of undergrads and old ass dudes who want to hit on undergrads. Is it a fun place to go every once in a while? Yes!! Is it a fun place to go every thursday, and afew other times a week? Lord no. I don't know why so many people on here are so into it lately, but please. Think of the poeple who like you, but who aren't in your little joke group. Would it kill you to try other places? The fact that kips is driving people away should be enough, but since your fucking comparing your plight to the people of Egypt you may be too far out to get the criticism by now.
I'm attributing 2:16's comments to beer tears.
It's ok, little buddy. You'll get there one day!
I feel like a majority of the anti-Kips oppressors are in this weird void of being :
(1) too cool for kips
yet
(2)not interested in going out in SF
They, by their own shameless accord, would rather crack a 6 pack of [insert microbrew that they pretend they love] and sit at their apartment opining about the last documentary they saw.
Boalt must attract them by the herd.
People do not actually like anything other than PBR and Coors Light? When did I miss that?
Not everyone has five dollars to spend per beer, elitist!
KIIIIIIIIIIPS
take a bow, 11:18!! kips defenders cant defend the factual statements about all the ways kips sucks, so they tilt at strawmen instead.
its rich that three different commenters made cracks about missouri lounge being too far away (i guess two blocks south of dwight is "effectively oakland" now) but somehow you have divined that the people who choose NOT to hang out at the miserable hole one block away from campus are too lazy to travel to decent bars.
i on the other hand thought about it for, like, one second and reached the opposite conclusion: maybe the people who enjoy chilling at a crap vortex havent ventured far enough out of the berkeley bubble to experience good places? or are just too lazy to do it again?
p.s. id pound gin before drinking a microbrew anynight, if you want to stereotype in the future
KIPS LIFESTYLE is definitely not for 9:51.
Bragging about drinking while taking a legal is definitely a sign of a member of the regime.
Why can't we just throw a keg out on the courtyard every thursday night?
Really 9:36? A keg? Have you been reading this thread at all? I do hear they are opening a bar in what used to be the fourth floor stacks.
Will someone PLEASE live blog the Kip's bar review tonight?!
Dan? Bueller?
You are all ignorant as to who the Lakireddy family are and what kind of people they really are. Why don't you rush to put your every mistake under the microscope and boycott your own bs? That would be too real! Imstead sit in judgement of others. I'm certain few to none of you have any experience at all with this family. That makes you the worst kind of people.
If you choose to boycott the Shattuck Down Low, do it for the right reasons. The management are rude and often uncaring of their patrons. Quite a few of the security are outright bad at their job and do not provide a safe environment. The place is often packed beyond a safe capacity. The bathrooms are dirty, and the whole place is in need of refurbishing. Plus Daniel has been a real jerk on many occasions. He's shown his colors. These just a few REAL reasons to avoid the SDL. There are more...
