100 Years of Boalt

Or more accurately, 97 years of Boalt and three years of being unsure what to call it. A few of my Facebook friends posted the below video, which celebrates Boalt and what makes it special. Check it out, then let's discuss in the comments.

Overall, I thought the video was very well done. I got a kick out of seeing the new building, and I loved hearing my former professors and administrators speak so fondly of the place.

On the other hand, I am not sure it conveyed the Boalt Hall I knew and loved very well. If I saw this and had never been there, I would come away thinking it was a lot stodgier and less fun than it actually is. I mean the first words in it are "I used to like to study," followed by two minutes on why the Socratic method rocks. Could we get even one joke in there? Edley is a funny guy!

Boalt has really changed a lot in the past couple years, because of tuition, the economy, and information finally getting to students.

Now that people realize that half the class will not be able to find employment to pay back their loans, and some may not even get the chance to be lawyers, things are naturally going to be much more competitive and less fun.

7:29am, you are so wrong and sad that it's funny.

Congrats!

Any guess how much Edley spent on this infomercial?

That's a good question. It's a good video (other than the odd Socratic method fetishism). Is it worth $10,000 though? $20,000?

Having worked in video production before, I can tell you that $20,000 probably is way low for a video of that length and quality.

No way. They had a tiny crew and a nice camera, but not a super fancy one.

Having worked in advertising, you could do this at this quality for less than $20k.

My understanding from talking to an alum at Alumni Weekend is that it's a fundraising video. If that's true, and it does it's job, then I don't really see an issue. It's a nice video. Makes us look top-tier.
