James Lyd*'s Departure

I am not in the habit of speculating as to the feelings of others; but I’m willing to bet that tonight’s email from James Lyd* meant a great deal more to some of us than it did to the rest.

Understandably, people tend not to say much about their visits with Dr. Lyd*. The walk to 362 Boalt is often, by design, an inconspicuous one. But it is important that the Boalt Community recognize the role that Dr. Lyd* plays, as both a counselor and a friend to so many.

I don’t know how quickly the administration plans to replace Dr. Lyd* - but I hope that when they do, it is with someone who is equally supportive, sincere and free of judgment.

That in mind, a quote from Mr. Rogers:

“Part of the problem with the word disabilities is that it immediately suggests an inability to see or hear or walk or do other things that many of us take for granted. But what of people who can't feel? Or talk about their feelings? Or manage their feelings in constructive ways? What of people who aren't able to form close and strong relationships? And people who cannot find fulfillment in their lives, or those who have lost hope, who live in disappointment and bitterness and find in life no joy, no love? These, it seems to me, are the real disabilities.”

Boalt students, faculty, staff, and deans,

It is with a heavy heart that I inform you that I am leaving UC Berkeley to take a position at UCSF Student Health and Counseling Services. I'm moving from Lawyers to Doctors and Nurses! I started the Counseling & Psychological Services' office at Boalt in January 2009. Since then I have such a wonderful experience working at Boalt, and it's hard to leave a place where I've come a part of the Boalt culture and family. I've come to learn what a special place this really is, and what makes it special are the students. I am extremely proud to be able to work at an institution that sees the value in providing this kind of support to students. The faculty and staff have been nothing but supportive and I'm proud to have worked at a trend setting, state of the art institution.

I will remain at Cal through December 2nd. Counseling and Psychological Services (CPS) is in the process of developing a plan for staffing the Boalt office after my departure. I will keep you informed of details as things progress.

If you currently have an appointment with me and/or are a student I am seeing on an ongoing basis for counseling, your scheduled appointments will remain intact, and I will work on a transition plan with each of you on an individual basis as needed.

For the rest of you, please note the following:

I am limiting drop-in consultation to the following dates and times, which will be available on a first come, first served basis:

Mondays 11/14, 11/21, and 11/28 from 8am - 11am
Thursday 11/17 from 11am - 2am

If these times do not work for you, and you want to speak with a counselor you have two options:

You can set up a "telephone triage" appointment with a CPS counselor to discuss your concerns and receive referral for services if needed. The number to call for this is 510-642-9494.
If you are in need of urgent support, go to drop-in counseling at CPS at the Tang Center (3rd floor). This is available Monday - Friday, 10am - 5pm (except holidays).

If you are a faculty member who needs consultation about a student of concern, you can continue to use me as your main contact until 11/25/11. After which you should call CPS at 510-642-9494 for consultation.

Sincerely,

James

Ah you beat me to the punch, Jackie. For those who were trying to paste the e-mail earlier, the blame lies with Blogger.

10:27 - you're correct.

Dr. Lyd* will be sorely missed! He's such an awesome person. Those doctors and nurses are lucky people.
