For those not on the text alert system: we just got two texts. The first said: EMERGENCY: There was a shooting at Haas Business School. Police are on the scene and everything is under control. Please avoid the area; find secure ind.

The second said:
One suspect in custody,, there are no further suspects involved. Please stay away from the area.

I'm guessing it got cut off and was supposed to say "find secure indoor location" or something similar.

Qualifying my comment at 3:04 - I think it is still unclear whether the person taken to the hospital was the gunman (shot by police) or a victim (shot by the gunman)

"According to UCPD spokesperson Alex Yao, the suspect and the victim are one and the same in this incident."

No source linked, though.

Finally after a long, long, long time berkeley.edu publishes something. Should be faster if campus safety info is published there.

Berkeley's IT department is in a sad state of affairs generally -- just look at the atrocity that is Telebears.

Andrew,

It's unlikely that the IT department has much to do with the speed with which content is published. There are probably non-technical staff in the the Public Affairs Office and the Chancellor's Office who can publish emergency content on the campus homepage.

9:58, I should have clarified -- parts of berkeley.edu were down while the messages were going out. That I do blame IT for.

Also, whoever designed the WarnMe system should at least have had the text messages mirrored on the berkeley.edu website. That's a design flaw that IT could remedy.

9:58 here.

Thanks, Andrew. I didn't realize that berkeley.edu was down this afternoon. It's certainly fair to blame IT for that.

And I agree that messages sent out via the warnme system should be mirrored on the campus homepage somewhere.
