BarBri 1.5 Speed (or more) Redux

If you're like me, you're impatient with the pace of the BarBri lectures and want to watch them at a faster speed. This has been an outstanding request with BarBri for at least a year, and N&B and ATL both have posts on this from last year. But if you don't want to dig through the comments, here's what currently works for me.

NB: AFAIK, this only works on Windows. If someone with a Mac has a solution, please chime in via the comments.
  1. Install the Internet Download Manager (IDM). There's a 30-day free trial, enough time for you to download whatever videos you need.
  2. Install VLC as a media player.
  3.  Log in to BarBri and start watching one of the lecture videos. If you've installed IDM correctly, you'll see something like this:

  4. Click the "Download this video" button.
  5. Once it's done downloading, open the resulting .flv file in VLC. In the menu, go to Playback > Speed > Faster. This will increase the speed by 50%. You can also increment the speed a little more (10%) by selecting Playback > Speed > Faster (fine).
Pro-tip: You can use the keyboard to adjust playback in VLC as well. By default, here are some common ones (you can see the rest in the preferences somewhere):
  • [ - 10% slower
  • ] - 10% faster
  • Space - pause
  • Alt + Left - Jump back 10 seconds
  • Ctrl + Left - Jump back 60 seconds
  • Alt + Right - Jump forward 10 seconds
  • Ctrl + Right - Jump forward 60 seconds
Again, not sure what the Mac equivalent of IDM would be. I suspect there's a Firefox plug-in but none of them seem to work for me. So if anyone has answers there, please chime in.

Any thoughts on this? http://www.lodinews.com/elections/article_e887d0b4-afa9-11e1-a096-0019bb2963f4.html

Princeton - Boalt - Congress? Doesn't seem right.

Has between 1.3 million-5.6 million in assets. basically fits the trust fund baby mold, gotta love how he calls his opponent out-of-touch though.

What kind of barely-25-year-old has between 1.3 and 5.6 million in assets?! Jesus. "Times are tough in the Valley. It's time we had a local voice in Congress," Ricky Gill says in his website video, as if he has a single fucking clue what tough times in the San Joaquin Valley are like.

What can someone who has never held a real job possibly have to say about running this country?

If you have a PC and a MAC, you can just transfer the downloaded file via pendrive or other and then play it in VLC player for Mac. That s what I did.

I've tried every single other method of doing this. This is the only one that seems to work now. You're a godsend.

The best part of Ricky Gill is how he got himself described on the ballot: "small businessman and farmer."

Farmer. Yes. Because he routinely plowed and seeded the back 40 at Princeton.

say what you want about Ricky Gill, he's accomplished way more than the haters ever will in his young life so far.

Does anyone have suggestions for the least expensive option for additional MBE practice questions (aside from the ones Barbri gives us)?

Hey 2:24-- not that I'm promoting this or anything, but if you go to the pirate bay and type in bar exam, you'll definitely find something useful. ;) Also thanks Andrew for the tip, I tried it and its working wonderfully.

12:09, What is the accomplishment of inheriting a large trust fund and family assets? How is that more than anyone else? You don't think we could also run for congress if we had millions in assets?

Sorry, but Gill has accomplished NOTHING compared to most Boalties in his same class.

Born rich. Went to Princeton. Barely worked at Princeton. Went straight to Boalt without doing anything of note in between. Did barely anything at Boalt. Has lots of money, so he runs for Congress.

How is that more than your average Boaltie? You might be right about the average Gill hater, but look where you are and who you're talking to. Most Boalties have a more impressive resume than Gill.

Also, just to put this in context, here's his opponent, incumbent Jerry McNerney's background:

- West Point for two years, but left in protest of Vietnam.
- PhD in Differential Geometry
- He's been working on clean energy since 1985 (before Ricky was born). This includes cutting edge work on wind power and wind turbines in California.
- He started a wind-turbine company in 2004.
- He voted for healthcare, union protections and has consistently voted for clean energy initiatives and tax credits and has opposed ocean drilling

So, I mean, I guess Ricky's done a ton compared to a clean energy expert who has worked hard to bring clean energy jobs to California and his district, both by being a "small business owner" as Ricky puts it, a scientist and a legislator.

It's a joke that someone with a big inheritance who hasn't done anything thinks he's more fit to govern than someone like McNerney.

Pretty sure this would be fair use as long as you're just time shifting (delete after one view). However, it still would constitute a breach of your contract with Barbri. But I don't think it would be material.

It suddenly stopped working for me today and IDM won't recognize it... anyone else having the same problem? Did BARBRI fuck us over?

@ 6:44 above - no, it's working fine. Sometimes the idm bar does not come up. Try reloading the BarBri video page or restarting the web browser.

I've been slacking off, missing entire weeks of lectures, and am now getting hosed. The 1.50x playback on VLC is a godsend. Good luck to all.

Hello everyone, So I followed the instructions and VLC will play but with no video image, and none of the features to skip or rewind which is the basic reason I did all of this in the first place.. VLC tells me that the file extension undfn is not recognized.. which i know means that i need to get codecs.. does anyone know what malware free pack I can use that would work / or an easier newer way to do this? I see this post is a bit old... I have wasted most of my morning trying to figure this out!!!!!!! :(

^ Try using a different browser (Firefox, Chrome, IE). The file extension of the video should be flv.

After feeling like I was going to kill myself due to the tedious Barbri evidence lecture I endured today, I decided to find out if there was anything I could do about it. I stumbled upon your blog. I'm so glad I did. Thank you very much. It worked for me.
